If you, like many others, were wondering if the 10 kilometer travel restriction that was in effect during Movement Control Order (MCO) still applies during the Controlled MCO (CMCO), you can put your doubts to rest. 

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob today (4 May) said that the restrictions no longer applies.

However, interstate travel is still not allowed.

A little bit of confusion

But, what if I live in Petaling Jaya but work in Bangsar, which is in two different states, you ask? 

We were confused too so we looked and found the most likely answer in these article by The Star and Malaysia Kini.


In the article dated 17 March, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador had said that essential workers traveling within Klang Valley did not need to apply for permission. 

In the Malaysia Kini article dated 2 April 2020, meanwhile, Ismail Sabri gave an example of people traveling from Petaling Jaya to Bangsar being allowed to do so. 

So, we think it's safe to conclude that you can travel within Klang Valley if you have a valid reason.

(Don't go visiting your friends in Kajang when you live in Segambut and blame us if you get fined or arrested lah)

This is because, as the minister reiterated during his press conference today, the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342) is still in effect and you can be charged if you're found guilty of breaking the law. 

If you're caught far from your home without a valid reason, you can still get fined or jailed. 

During the press conference, the minister also said that the focus of the enforcement agencies such as the Police and the Army during CMCO will be on the compliance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). 

Companies or businesses that are found to not have complied by the SOP can be fined under the same act, and more severe action may be taken depending on the offence. 

We're still far from safe from the COVID-19 virus and likely will not be for a long time. Stay home if and when you can, practice good hygine and stay safe!
