#GempakSpot: Malaysia's Longest-Running Creative Arts Festival Urbanscapes Is Returning This November
For the past 16 years, Urbanscapes has taken over the city with the cream of the crop from the local arts scene.
Now, Malaysia's longest running creative arts festival is returning once again with nine days fo music, visual and performance art that help you feel slightly more cultured that you've ever been.
Taking place across Kuala Lumpur, this year's edition of Urbanscapes will take place from 16 to 24 November, and it is expected to attract more than 50,000 attendees in this city-wide celebration.
Building on last year's theme, the festival is calling everyone to #reconnectKL as they engage with activities that will occupy Medan Pasar, River of Life, REXKL, The Godown KL, Sentul Depot, Kwai Chai Hong, Lorong Bandar 13, Lorong Panggung, and more spaces situated in the heart of the city.
Staying true to its identity, Urbanscapes will once again collaborate with local and international artists, as well as creative communities to bring the city to life.
"We want Urbanscapes to inspire people to get out of their homes and explore their city, to discover new experiences and create meaningful conversations around all the fest has to offer," Urbanscapes founder Adrian Yap said.
This year, the Unlimited Grooves Festival (UGF) by U Mobile will also return with a three-day music extravaganza that will culminate with Urbanscapes’ closing party happening on 21, 22 and 24 November at Sentul Depot.
The star-studded lineup on those nights include local and international musicians for every palate, namely Boy Pablo, Colde, Lost Spaces, Sunset Rollercoaster, and The Drums.
And that's not all.
The BMW Shorties, Malaysia’s most prestigious and longest running short film competition will also be at Urbanscapes to host Tayangan BMW Shorties, a week-long screening of genre films from Southeast Asia.
The screenings will be happening at the iconic REXKL theatre throughout the festival, and the mini film festival will culminate with the BMW Shorties Awards Night on 23 November, where the Top 10 Finalists and Grand Prize Winner of BMW Shorties 2019 will be announced.
Of course, not forgetting that the beloved part of the Urbanscapes experience for festival-goers are the breathtaking art installations and public art works that decorate the city's landscape.
So this year, NIPPON PAINT presents Colours Of Life that commissions emerging and established street artists to bring life and colour to the city.
Along with that, IMMERSIO, with its indispensable site-specific new media art curated by audio visual collective Filamen, will produce an interactive arts exhibited paired with performances inside three heritage shophouses in Medan Pasar.
It looks like Urbanscapes 2019 is coming along to be the biggest edition yet and we are excited to paint the city in colours once again.
