Everyone Knows Lamine Yamal, But How Many Of These Malaysian World Champions Do You Know?

Let's be honest. Most Malaysians have probably heard of Lamine Yamal. Even if you don't follow football, you've likely seen the Barcelona wonderkid popping up in your social media feed more than once.

But here's a tougher question: how many Malaysian world champions can you name off the top of your head?

For a country that constantly talks about punching above its weight in sports, we've produced quite a few athletes who've reached the very top of their respective disciplines. The funny thing is, some of them don't get nearly as much attention as they deserve.

Here are some Malaysians who didn't just compete on the world stage, they conquered it.

1. Nicol David

When people talk about Malaysian sporting greatness, Nicol David should be at the top of the conversation.

The Penang-born squash legend won eight World Championship titles and spent a record 108 consecutive months as world No. 1. For more than a decade, she was the player everyone else was chasing. Few athletes anywhere in the world have dominated their sport the way Nicol did.

2. Aaron Chia & Soh Wooi Yik

Malaysia has produced plenty of badminton legends.

What it didn't have until 2022 was a Badminton World Championship title. That changed when Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik defeated Indonesia's Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan to become Malaysia's first-ever men's doubles world champions. 

3. Cheah Liek Hou

The para badminton star has spent years dominating the international circuit, winning multiple world titles and cementing his place as one of Malaysia's most accomplished athletes. His consistency at the highest level has made him one of the defining figures in para badminton.

In fact, his journey was compelling enough to inspire Gold, the Astro Shaw biopic starring Jack Tan, which chronicled the challenges and triumphs that shaped his career. While not every Malaysian may recognise his name instantly, his story has quite literally made it to the silver screen.

4. Natasha Roslan

Bowling might not get the spotlight that badminton or football enjoys, but Malaysia has produced some world-class talent in the sport.

Among them is Natasha Roslan, who captured the women's singles title at the World Bowling Championships and added another world champion to Malaysia's growing list.

5. Bonnie Bunyau Gustin

Bonnie Bunyau Gustin is one of the strongest athletes Malaysia has ever produced, literally.

The Sarawakian para powerlifter has dominated international competition for years, collecting world titles while cementing his reputation as one of the sport's elite competitors. He's also become one of Malaysia's most successful para athletes of his generation.

6. Karamjit Singh

Long before Malaysians were obsessing over Formula 1, there was Karamjit Singh.

Better known as the "Flying Sikh", Karamjit is one of the most accomplished motorsport athletes the country has ever produced. In a career spanning decades, he became the first Malaysian and the first Asian to win an international rally world title, adding the 2002 FIA Production Car World Championship to a résumé that also includes the 2001 Asia Pacific Rally Championship and FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship titles in 2002 and 2004.

His impact was significant enough that Astro Shaw and Woohoo Pictures are now bringing a story inspired by his journey to cinemas through Terbang, directed by The Journey and Ola Bola filmmaker Chiu Keng Guan.

The upcoming film isn't strictly a biopic, but it aims to revisit Malaysia's rallying heyday and introduce Karamjit's legacy to a new generation.
