We are all pretty much sick of shopping malls, aren’t we? Besides mindless window shopping, there does not seem to be much to do on weekends. There is of course also the usual café hopping. Yawn.

Those who want to escape into the pages of a good book like we do can check out this list of spots instead:

Raja Tun Uda Library, Shah Alam

The library is a sprawling modern complex spanning six floors that also includes workstations, a cafeteria and a children’s zone. It is even replete with a tranquil view of the adjacent Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Golf and Country Club with a park and lake, perfect for a short stroll after borrowing some choice titles. Impressively equipped with state-of-the-art technology, you will even find a multi-sensory 6D theatre here (subject to charges).

Kurau Community Library

This place is somewhat troublesome to visit because it is open at odd hours from 3.00 p.m. – 7.00 p.m. from Tuesdays to Sundays. It is a relatively hidden spot unbeknownst to many located in Bangsar, somewhere we usually would not associate with books. This hidden gem with steel bookshelves and a modern façade stores a whopping 35,000 titles and counting.

BookXcess, RexKl

80,000 books are housed in glowing bookshelves that double as the perfect backdrop for photo or two along with its original brick and exposed structure. Opened last year, this bookstore has become a must visit for those who want a shot for the Gram or to pick up some affordable titles. It is in the former cinema which has since been reimagined into a community and cultural hub.

The Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur Library

A little known but cosy spot, the library boasts a wide range of materials on Japan including books, comics, and DVDs. Besides housing books, the centre hosts Arts and Cultural Exchange events. The library is open to the public and there are snug areas to sit at complete with cushions and warm lighting.

Which of these spots are you planning to visit?
