Phua Chu Kang became a Singaporean icon in the 90s and he arguably might even be better known than the founding father of modern Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew. Despite hanging up his yellow boots years ago, Gurmit Singh who played the titular role is still active as an actor and a comedian will be coming on 20 & July 21 for his Laugh Die You – Hero Singh Live in KL 2024 show.

To promote his show, he appeared in local influencer DanielDinesKL’s video which has over 389K followers on TikTok where he chose between Malaysia and Singapore for different hawker dishes. The video now has over 1.6M views on social media as of the time of writing.

Despite being attired in an all-black garb, Gurmit still managed to act out his famous lines from PCK perfectly such as "Best in Singapore, JB, and some say Batam" and “Don’t Pray Pray”. Gurmit and Daniel then had nasi lemak at Mali’s Corner in Setapak, and he was also amused with his hilarious antics. When asked which nasi lemak he prefers between Malaysia and Singapore, Gurmit instantly answered, “Malaysia” to which Daniel gasped. Gurmit added, “You see, no hesitation ah.”

Gurmit then ordered a plate of nasi lemak with bergedil (vegetable fritters), telur rebus, fried chicken, and curry. “Wah, smells so good”, he remarked when he received his plate. Gurmit impressively tucked into his nasi lemak using his hands even though Daniel himself used cutleries.

He enjoyed the meal thoroughly, saying it was “more than okay”. When asked if he liked sweet or spicy sambal, Gurmit answered, “It’s like do you like dark chocolate or milk chocolate? It depends on the day lah.”

Gurmit then chomped on the boiled egg, comically saying, “Wow, this mother hen was very good.” Daniel then played a quickfire game with him, asking him to choose Malaysia or Singapore for each dish he mentioned. He opted for nasi lemak and hokkien mee from Malaysia. As for chicken rice, Gurmit said “It used to be Singapore, but the stall closed so now it’s Malaysia.”

On the other hand, he chose bak kut teh and chili crab from Singapore. He also chose Singapore’s char kway teow, saying “There is one very wok one. I promise you (it’s) very good” while squirming as he answered. He jokingly appeared to wipe off sweat from his face, knowing that netizens might react to his selections. Side note: We can accept bak kut teh and chilli crab but not char kway teow. *sobs* Please come to Penang, Gurmit! We will bring you to all the best CKT places!
