Ferrari Scores A Hattrick At The Red Dot Award 2020

Every year, Red Dot dishes out awards to only the best designs that are innovative in form and function. The awards are given out to multiple categories, from kitchen utensils to writing instruments. We are more familiar with the organisation handing out the award to cars that are provocative in design. Mazda had won two, and so did Ferrari for the Roma and F8 Tributo.

Yet, all of them pale in comparison to the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, the supercar that was awarded the 2020 Red Dot: Best of the Best. Plucked from Red Dot’s website, “The Red Dot: Best of the Best is awarded for groundbreaking design and is the top prize in the Red Dot Award: Design Concept. This prize is reserved for the best works in a category.” The category, in this case, is Cars and Motorcycles.

These accolades highlight the creative vision of Flavio Manzoni, Senior VP of Design at Ferrari, and the entire team at Ferrari Styling Centre under his leadership. The Maranello outfit has strived to create distinctive designs for the Scuderia’s sports cars, while at the same time, underlining the unique symbiosis between form and function engraved in the marque’s DNA.

The SF90 Stradale is the most powerful production car to ever adorn a Prancing Horse shield. It represents a new chapter for Ferrari too, being the carmaker’s first-ever series-production PHEV.

Powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 (an evolution of the unit found in the F8 Tributo) and three electric motors, the SF90 pumps out a combined system output of 986hp and 800Nm of torque. With the 0-100kph sprint done in just 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 340kph, the SF90 is genuinely a mind-boggling masterpiece.

Having said that, this is not Ferrari’s first Best of the Best. In fact, the jury has granted the highest distinction in the competition, the Red Dot: Best of the Best, to six Prancing Horse models in a row. After the FXX-K, 488 GTB, J50, Ferrari Portofino, and Monza SP1, this year sees the SF90 Stradale receive the accolade for the innovative lines that encapsulate the car’s mission as an extreme sports car. Since 2015, Ferrari has won a staggering 17 Red Dot Awards, a feat no other automotive manufacturer has yet to achieve.
