Ludacris Hints The Fast & Furious Franchise Is About To Enter Orbit… Literally

Seeing how the Fast & Furious franchise has always upped the ante and lowered the dependence on logic with every successive movie, you’ve surely heard someone crack a joke that the next movie will probably leave the restraints of gravity for the final frontier of space… well, jokes on you.

Franchise regular Ludacris might have hinted that Fast & Furious 9 is indeed headed for space; probably on some SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets boosted by nitrous oxide (NOS) to save Starman and his Tesla Roadster from Darth Vader.

At this point, who cares if it makes sense?

Collectively, the franchise has made Universal Pictures $5.9 billion at the box office, making it one of the most financially successful franchises in movie-making.

The original street racing and low-level heist theme set the tone for the franchise and carried the first three movies before the studio decided they needed to raise the action factor and disregard Albert Einstein’s Nobel-winning work.

As the money kept pouring in, the logic had to be poured out. Even bringing back a dead character (Han) wouldn’t cut it. Action sequences went from ridiculous to downright preposterous with the last movie; The Fate of the Furious, throwing a submarine into the mix.

Once you’ve played the deep-dive ocean card, the only way to go is up… into orbit. Ludacris was asked this very question during a recent interview on SiriusXM, regarding how the franchise plans to crank up the action for Fast 9. The interviewer threw around some possible scenarios including space, shooting in the dark for reaction, and she got one.

Ludacris didn’t directly acknowledge that space was the answer but he hinted that she got something right and our pinkslips are on the final frontier. You can catch the interview below and decide for yourself.

As farcical as it sounds, many other long-running movie franchises have played the space card, including our favourite spy James Bond. Nonetheless, the space card is one seen as throwing a Hail Mary in times of desperation for franchises running on fumes.

The Fast & Furious franchise doesn’t seem to have hit a dead end yet but with Earth mostly covered in all eight movies thus far, we’re all for strapping Dominic Toretto’s Dodge Charger and a few other JDM machines into Elon Musk’s Falcon 9 rocket and head for space to fight John Cena (he’s actually in the baddie, no joke).
