Behind the Wheel
The Mercedes-AMG A35 Is The Most Affordable Entry Into AMG Ownership
If anything, Mercedes-AMG machines are some of the best-sounding performance cars in the market and that statement rings true for its entire range. Maybe they aren’t the easiest on the wallet but now there’s the most affordable AMG model that paves the way into AMG ownership for you; the Mercedes-AMG A35 4Matic.
If you think the letters “CL” preceding the A are missing, this is not the CLA but the A-Class Sedan that was launched earlier this year.
Under the hood, you’ll find a 2.0-litre turbo-four with AMG pedigree in its design. The crankcase is constructed of high-strength, lightweight die-cast aluminium to reduce the weight in the steering end.
The important figures are 306hp and 400Nm of torque that hit all four wheels via the AMG-specific 4Matic all-wheel drive system. With the AMG seven-speed dual-clutch sitting in between, the A35 will reach the century mark in 4.8-seconds and climb all the way to 250kph.
When the going gets slippery, the 4Matic system can split the torque to a maximum of 50:50. Under regular conditions, it’s just the front wheels doing the heavy lifting. It rolls on 19-inch AMG five twin-spoke alloy wheels.
Although the A-Class range isn’t the most generous with interior room, that doesn’t mean it can’t be a nice cabin. The seats are wrapped in Artico man-made leather with Dinamica microfibres in black with red contrasting topstitching and red seat belts. Some peppering of red trimming further enhances the AMG identify in the cabin.
Of course, being a part of the new A-Class range means the funky new MBUX infotainment system is present. The familiar design of the digital instrument cluster screen and the infotainment display combined in a shared glass cover.
Apart from an exhaust note that induces aural nirvana and the performance to match, AMG vehicles are known for excessive horsepower. To keep all the ponies in the stable, the engineers went right down to the body-in-white for a solid base.
Strengthening work the front section of the bodyshell ensure more consistent and precise turn-in ability and a smoother toe and camber curve for the stability of the chassis components. A so-called “shearing plate”, an aluminium plate underneath the engine, increases the torsional rigidity and bending resistance at the vehicle’s front end. Two additional diagonal braces at the front of the underbody also reduce torsion and increase the stiffness.
The final component of the equation is the AMG Ride Control suspension that’s basically adaptive damping with three selectable modes for the driver.
