The Ford Mustang has been the world’s sports car of choice for the five years in a row now, and it’s not hard to see why. From the fuel-sipping 2.3-litre four-pot EcoBoost to the fire-breathing 760hp Shelby GT500, there’s something for everyone. The Mustang GT is the entry-level Mustang if you want to get that sweet Coyote V8. But if you already have the Mustang GT and find the 460hp and 570Nm somewhat….inadequate, Ford has just the thing for you.

Ford Performance has just launched a new performance kit that boosts both low-end torque and high-end power for the Mustang’s V8. The M-9603-M8B performance kit adds 19hp at 6500rpm and 57Nm of torque from just 2000rpm. This brings the grand total power output to 479 ‘Murican ponies and a whopping 627Nm of twist.

Ford has achieved this power gain using some trick new hardware in the shape of a new cold air intake and a performance 87mm throttle body with a throttle body adapter. Ford has recalibrated the engine’s software via a Pro Cal 4 calibration delivery tool. These enhancements lend to increased throttle response and optimised shift performance for both the automatic and manual transmissions.

These upgrades are available on the facelifted Mustang GT (2018-2020), although the software calibrations are for US and Canadian vehicles only. Though the gains in power don’t seem like an awful lot, it is the safest way to add power to the Mustang GT as the performance kit comes with a three-year/57,000km warranty, if installed an authorised Ford Dealer. Sorry, this isn’t a project for you DIY guys.

Having said that, it is unlikely that Sime Darby Auto Connexion will make the kit available in Malaysia. But it would be a nice addition for our local Mustang drivers to see power gains without voiding warranties with aftermarket bits.
