BEHIND THE WHEEL

New Mercedes-Benz C 200 Finally Gets The Power It Deserves

Alright, so the idea was right at the time to have a smaller engine with power output similar to the engine it replaced. Low fuel consumption was the goal, and the mild-hybrid engine does do as it is told. Just as a coin has two sides, the C 200 performs well in the city but loses breath quickly on the highway. But let bygones be bygones because the new Mercedes-Benz C 200 has a bigger engine.

The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine in this new C 200 produces a reputation-redeeming 204hp and 300Nm, successfully erasing the previous 1.5-litre mild-hybrid from memory. Power goes through the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic for a 0-100kph time of 7.1 seconds and a top speed of 250kph.

The C 200’s path to redemption doesn’t stop there. The sedan is fitted with a sport suspension that will make good use of the 18-inch tyres wrapped around the AMG five-spoke light-alloy wheels.

Of course, the wheels come from the same AMG Line box that layers sporty embellishments on an otherwise sedated design. So the C 200 has its three-pointed star sitting in the middle of the diamond grille with chrome pins. The front apron, with its sporty air intake, completes the aggressive fascia. On the back, the diffuser-look rear apron underscores the sedan’s sporty ambitions.

The AMG Line also, uh, lines the interior with sporty bits. ARTICO leather upholstery, galvanised steering wheel gearshift paddles and AMG sport pedals are just some of the more notable mentions in the list.

Now, it wouldn’t be a new Mercedes-Benz without at least mentioning that it has the Mercedes me connect, a tool that lets you unlock your car, start the engine, check the fuel level and more from your phone. Also, part of the Mercedes me connect features are Mercedes-Benz emergency call system (E-call), remote vehicle diagnosis, pre-entry climate control, predictive navigation and parked vehicle located. The C 200 checks the safety boxes with Active Brake Assist, PRE-SAFE and Blind Spot Assist.

The Mercedes-Benz C 200 AMG Line is priced at RM251,578.39 OTR without insurance. The EaseProtect Financing is available for this C 200, which starts at RM2,988 per month. The package comes with comprehensive motor insurance, tyre and rim insurance for the first year of ownership and a MobilityPlus replacement car programme. It’s a sweet deal but if this doesn’t sway you, then not much else will.
