Remember the 5 Series GT? It was a cross-over of BMW's greatest hits at the time, but it turned out to be a turn-off for more than a few fans. Not wanting to dwell too much in the past, we quickly move on to the much-sleeker successor, the 6 Series GT.

Bringing the niche model in line with the Bavarian brand's new design language, the 630i GT has a more angular headlight, enlarged kidney grille, a new bumper design, and sharper LED daytime running lights. BMW Laserlight technology will now be available, complementing the LED Matrix headlights system. With up to 650 metres of illumination range, laser lights follow the course of the road ahead and, for the first time, have adaptive illumination in low-beam as well.

The silhouette of the 630i GT is unique in the automotive world, with solid and athletic shoulder lines running through the car's entire length. Fitted with 20-inch Star-spoke M light-alloy wheels and wrapped in either standard or run-flat tyres, the M Sport trim also comes with blue M Sport brake callipers and the high-gloss Shadow Line package.

On the rear, the 630i GT has a redesigned bumper and a pseudo diffuser that comes as part of the M Sport package and two-sided trapezoidal exhaust pipes. A functional, active rear spoiler can be found to increase downforce at higher speeds. The spoiler deploys at speeds of above 120kph and retracts once the car slows down to 80kph.

Under the hood is the BMW's tried and tested 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine developing 258hp and peak torque of 400Nm. It is mated to the familiar eight-speed automatic transmission. The hefty behemoth completes the century sprint in 6.5 seconds all the way to a limited 250kph. Despite its impressive performance, the 630i GT is remarkably clean, consuming just 7.3 litres per 100km and emitting 166g of CO2 per km.

The interior of the 630i GT forms part of its defining characteristics, supremely comfortable with spades of luxury thrown into the mix. Dakota leather upholstery, headliner anthracite and open-pored fine-wood ash trunkwood trim with Pearl Chrome highlight finish, and the leather M Sport steering wheel are amongst the highlights that amplify the luxury ambience of the interior. Making the experience even more pleasing is the four-zone climate control, electrical rear sunblind's, metre-long panoramic glass sunroof and leather sports seats for the driver and front passenger.

The fully digital BMW Live Cockpit Professional is available as standard, comprising a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and an equally sized central touchscreen that can be controlled with BMW Gesture control. Features that form part of this system include navigation, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, 4G LTE connectivity and various services such as Remote Software Upgrade and over-the-air map updates. The 16-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system and BMW Display Key are additional accoutrements to the already comprehensive technology suite of the 630i GT.

More impressively, the BMW 630i GT comes with a suite of driving aids that enhance the driving experience. BMW Driving Assistant with Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function and Parking Assistant with Surround View camera system are amongst the key highlights of its safety system.

Customisation is key in a niche vehicle like the 630i GT. BMW Malaysia has given a myriad of options for owners to choose from. The 630i GT M Sport is offered in four exquisite exterior colours: Bernina Grey, Amber Effect, Mineral White, Carbon Black, and Sophisto Grey Brilliant Effect. As for the interior, customers can choose either Leather 'Dakota' Black or Leather 'Dakota' Cognac, both of which are complete with exclusive stitching and contrasting leather piping.

Retail pricing for the BMW 630i GT M Sport (on the road without insurance) is RM430,800 with SST (RM417,659 without SST). As part of the ownership experience, BMW Malaysia offers the BMW 5-Year Unlimited Mileage Warranty with Free Scheduled Service Programme, BMW Roadside Assistance and Accident Hotline, BMW Group Loyalty+ Mobile App with BMW Privileges Card and BMW Service Online.

BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia also offer a Balloon Financing Plan for the 630i GT M Sport can be owned with a monthly instalment plan starting from RM4,778.00 (based on estimates of an 80% loan on a five-year tenure).

The BMW 630i GT M Sport will be available at all authorised BMW dealerships nationwide starting 28th May 2021. Meanwhile, customers may also book the New BMW 630i GT M Sport for RM3,000 via the BMW Shop Online platform at https://shop.bmw.com.my/ from 29th May 2021 onwards.

The BMW 630i GT M Sport is the answer to the need for a luxury coupe with generous functional space that is not an SUV. Despite how incredibly niche it sounds, we're sure that we'll soon see more than one on the road.
