The Porsche Macan S Isn’t Wallet-friendly, But It Is Oh So Powerful

Following in the wake of the Porsche Macan’s launch several weeks ago, the Porsche Macan S offers more significant power to satisfy drivers who want something more prominent under the hood. However, the Macan S has a considerable jump in price, creating a ravine of about RM200,000 large between it and the regular Macan. Let the snobbery commence.

However, the snobbery is well earned. The Macan S gets power from a 3.0-litre V6 engine, the same as the previous but rejigged to jiggle 14hp and 20Nm more from the sum of its parts. In total, the Macan S produces 354hp and 480Nm, which is passed through a seven-speed PDK before arriving at all four wheels. The Macan S, with the optional Sport Chrono pack, breaks the 0-100kph in 5.1 seconds and up to a top speed of 254kph. The increase in performance level is possible when the turbocharger in sitting inside the cylinder V for a ‘central turbo layout’, resulting in delivering high torque at low engine speeds.

As with the Macan, the Macan S also runs with staggered tyre sizes with the Porsche Traction Management. Replacing the old, aluminium spring forks takes the place of steel components on the front axle. This new light-alloy design improves chassis rigidity and its unsprung mass reduced for sharper steering and better ride comfort.

Height-adjustable air suspension with optimized rolling pistons and new shock absorber hydraulics have been adapted into the Porsche Active Stability Management (PASM). The only way to have better driving dynamics is if you check the box for the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus).

Not just the engine and chassis but the brakes have been improved. For this new Macan S, the shortened lever arm between the brake pedal and master cylinder gives a more direct feel of the brakes.

The diameter of the brake discs is increased to 360mm, up by 10mm. The discs are thickened by 2mm for a total of 36mm. One way to improve this SUV’s stopping power is to opt for the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB).

The options just don’t stop with the technical bits – it continues to the interior cosmetics as well. You can have your Macan S with the GT sports steering complete with the mode switch and Sport Response button, which is part of the optional Sport Chrono Package. And you can have an ionizer with your standard fine particulate filter for cleaner air inside.

The Macan S can be on your driveway from RM625,000; expect more when you start adding on the performance bits. The price does include a four-year warranty and maintenance package that bundles in parts and labour. The Premium Package, which has 14-way power seats, Park Assist including reversing camera and BOSE sound system in the box, is also included in the price.
