The Refreshed GLC, Mercedes And Me

Things in the industry tends to slow down towards the year end but Mercedes-Benz Malaysia managed to wrap up a phenomenal year for them by squeezing in the launch of an updated GLC with a new Mercedes Me feature that brings LTE connectivity to the table for smartphone operation of the vehicle and can also be adapted to older models from over 10 years ago.

Mercedes-Benz global has been hard at work streamlining their models with the current design language. The world first laid eyes on it with the new GLE and we’ll admit that the tame looks aren’t for everyone but they’re all going to look like that so you may as well get on board. Plus, Mercedes Me is the real highlight here.

First, a quick run through on the three-strong refreshed GLC line-up. The entry variant is still the GLC200 but there’s no 250 model, instead replaced by the GLC300 4Matic. At the top of the pyramid is the GLC300 4Matic Coupe. Pricing is RM299,888, RM 350,000 and RM 419,888 respectively.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbo inline-four for all variants. In the GLC200, it makes 197hp and 320Nm of torque that is sent to the rear. Both GLC300 variants get the power upped to 258hp and 370Nm of torque and it’s channeled to all four wheels. The 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission is standard across the range.

Of course, MBUX finally makes its debut in the GLC with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. That means natural voice commands and controls for users. The interior gets all the current cues from the updated models but will still be instantly familiar and intuitive to Mercedes-Benz owners.

The exterior of the GLC range takes on the headlight and taillight cues from the GLE and GLB. LED headlights are standard.

Equipment wise, the GLC200 rides on 20-inch wheels and with the Comfort suspension that rides higher. Inside, it’s power-adjustable front seats, keyless entry and start, active park assist, blind-spot monitor.

As for the GLC300, it rides on Agility Control suspension with selective damping. The headlights are Multibeam LED units and now gain Adaptive Highbeam Assist. There’s a panoramic sunroof, the AMG Line exterior and interior as well as the Night Package. A 360-degree camera makes parking that much easier.

Mercedes Me works hand-in-hand with MBUX to increase the functionality of the infotainment system using LTE connectivity; your smartphone and a service provider. Maxis is the service provider of choice and there’ll be a SIM card in the vehicle to allow for the system to operate via your smartphone. Some of the functions include remotely starting your car as well as checking the fuel level or getting customer support. Two buttons located just in front of the rear-view mirror is part of the system with one for emergency SOS services and another to connect you with a customer service representative.
