5 Reasons Why ‘Captain Marvel’ Is A Badass And The Epitome Of GIRL POWER

Iylia Adreena 06/03/2019 | 10:36 MYT
It has been more than 10 years since we were first introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and its colourful characters from various movies.
For years, many of us believed that members of The Avengers are the strongest and will be the beacon of hope for all mankind.
But that all changed after 'Avengers: Infinity War'. Thanos’ devastating snap wiped out half of the universe’s population and broke not only the hearts of the remaining characters but us fans too.
'Avengers: Infinity War' was a depressing phase for fans.
So, who will save the day? That’s when a dark horse emerges, a saviour unknown to many and possibly a well-kept Marvel secret – Captain Marvel.
It is said that Carol Danvers will be the ultimate ‘light’ in saving the Avengers. So, who is she?
Rojak Daily was invited to an exclusive screening for press members of ‘Captain Marvel’ and boy, were we stunned; it was truly Marvel-ous!
So, here’s why we feel ‘Captain Marvel’ defines the true meaning of girl power.

#1 Falls Seven Times, Stand Up Eight

Guess who's running the show? Vers a.k.a Captain Marvel.
If you’ve seen the trailer, you’ll know that Carol Danvers barely remembers who she is or her past. And all she does is just fall, fall, and fall. Well, guess what? To be a great leader you’d need to fail before succeeding and she did exactly that. She had to endure a lot of obstacles from being constantly told she's not good enough, being betrayed by the person she trusts the most to her memory lapse before realizing her true potential.
There were also a few male tones undermining Danvers’ capability but all that did was make her fly “higher, further, faster”. And what did she say to these naysayers? "I don't need to prove anything to you." Boom! We stan a strong, confident woman.

#2 She’s Her Own Boss

Thanos, meet the badass lady that's going to take you down.
How strong is Captain Marvel? Well, apart from being mentally strong (you'll understand why when you watch the movie), she’s also a physical force to be reckoned with. She single-handedly took down more than a dozen of Skrull’s best men using minimal powers, flicked off dozens of intergalactic bombs, helped power a broken spaceship, took down a guy three times her size – all looking like she didn’t even break a sweat.
Her powers? Well, one blast from her bare hands would put Tony Stark’s suit and Thor’s hammer to shame. Plus, she can fly without using any aircraft or tech! Let’s just say she doesn’t need any weapon because she is the weapon.

#3 Friends Forever

The kind of friendship you wish you have.
In the movie, you’ll learn that Danvers has a best friend while serving in the air force named Maria Rambeau. Brie Larson and Lashana Lynch's on screen chemistry is so impeccable and you'd actually believe that their relationship is genuine. They truly complement each other.
Rambeau, too, is a strong female character who just like Danvers, won’t take no for an answer. She told off both Fury and Talos (leader of Skrulls) and put them in their place. A fierce friend is definitely what every superheroin needs.
We teared up when Rambeau poured her heart out and told Danvers the pain she had to endure when she thought she had lost her forever in a crash. Even after all these years, Maria still stood by her best pal. She supported her throughout her whole self-realisation-superwoman process while having to digest who Danvers is today. The beauty of their friendship is something we should all learn from.

#4 Brains And Brawns

Someone's going to get beaten up so badly...
If you were suddenly ‘lost’ in another country or let alone another planet, the first thing you’d do is freak out and bawl your eyes out. But Danvers being the true girl boss she is, was calm, composed and positive.
She didn’t waste any time putting on her 'Dora the Explorer' cap and looked for answers she’s been looking for all her life. Doing it the old school way, she went to cyber cafes, read maps, asked strangers for leads and even used a pc that comes with a cd player to encrypt some important stuff (which was funny because it took forever to load).
What's more impressive is her ability to make a mountain out of a molehill! Throughout the movie, you'll see Danvers using her wit to get herself out of trouble. And if there's one thing you won't expect from her is she's a bit of a tech wizard.

#5 The Key To Saving The Avengers

Is the world ready for Carol Danvers?
There’s nothing more satisfying than watching Captain Marvel beating up bad guys with No Doubt’s “Just A Girl” playing in the background and knowing that this very woman will be the key to saving the Avengers and every being in the universe. Pounding villain to villain and seeing how she uses her powers, you'd think 1,000 times before crossing the line with her.
A lot people have speculated that Danvers will eventually come to save the day and after seeing how powerful and capable she is, we believe that Thanos won’t know what’s going to hit him soon.
Marvel really had to 'keep' her for 10 years to finally introduce the strongest MCU character, huh?

Notable Mentions

Look ma, no eye patch!
In this movie, you'll also get a glimpse of a few important characters prior to the whole Avengers era. Nick Fury looks younger, has hair (and both eyes!), Agent Coulson just started out as a rookie S.H.I.E.L.D agent and Ronan the Accuser doesn't look that terrifying. You'll find out a lot of key events that may seem minuscule but it'll shape who Fury and the organisation is in the present day.
We absolutely adored both Fury and Danver's banter throughout the movie especially when the latter was 'kind' enough to not steal the former's thunder in one of the scenes. Captain Marvel could've freed both of them from captive in a heatbeat but she hilariously made him work for it on his own.
Next up: world domination.
Besides Captain Marvel, there's another character that deserves its very own spotlight: Goose. Danver's cat isn't what you think it is, and don't let those cute round eyes and fluffly orange fur fool you. Goose, just like its master, is a galatic feline to be reckoned with.

VERDICT

A dark horse is coming soon...
Captain Marvel strays away from your typical male-dominated Marvel superhero movie. The cliché narrative of a hero saving a damsel in distress is long gone because now, the tables have turned. It was an estrogen-fueled adventure full of female domination and empowerment. The film was a great backstory to introduce this significant MCU character.
Carol Danvers is a strong, witty character who comes with great abilities to the extent that if you pit the Avengers and her in a showdown, we can attest that she too, will wipe them out in a heartbeat; just like Thanos.
We also appreciated the whole 90s vibe throughout the movie because it was such a nice change to see a throwback to an era before smartphones and social media. The soundtrack chosen was also very spot on and fits the timeline which means you could sing along to the songs and know the lyrics by heart!
And psst, be sure to stay back for two end-credit scenes because they are by far the most important end-credit scenes in MCU history to date!
