‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Author Kevin Kwan Is Wanted By The Singaporean Ministry Of Defence

We can all agree that almost everyone knows Kevin Kwan by now, as he's the man who penned the insanely popular novel Crazy Rich Asians, which has been adapted into a Hollywood production featuring some of Malaysia’s very own stars as the lead – Henry Golding and Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh.

The Singaporean author now resides in the United States after leaving Singapore at the age of 11.

He might’ve left the Lion City a long time ago, but it seems that Singapore did not forget about him. Or in this case, the Singaporean Ministry of Defence still remembers him very clearly.

Kwan is actually wanted by the Singaporean Mindef for defaulting on his National Service obligations, as reported by the Straits Times.

“Mr Kevin Kwan failed to register for National Service (NS) in 1990, despite notices and letters sent to his overseas address. He also stayed overseas without a valid exit permit. Mr Kwan is therefore wanted for defaulting on his NS obligations,” according to a statement by Singapore’s Mindef.

It was also found that Kwan had tried to renounce his Singaporean citizenship in 1994 without serving NS but was rejected.

The author is now liable or a fine of up to $10,000 (RM29,930.36) and/or imprisonment of up to three years if convicted under the Enlistment Act.

Yikes! Guess you have to get that sorted out soon, Mr. Kwan.

But if you're indeed getting fined by the Singaporean government, we know you’d probably have no qualms paying it cause you're probably crazy rich by now.
