The Devil Wears Prada Sequel Allegedly Confirmed, Meryl Streep & Emily Blunt May Be Joining
The Devil Wears Prada was released 18 years ago, but it became an instant classic, and iconic lines from the Disney movie are still being shared on social media. “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking.” And can we forget, “Is there some reason that my coffee isn’t here? Has she died or something?”
You might have never thought that a sequel would ever happen, but it is reportedly finally in the works.
If your memories of the movie are wonky, the original movie revolved around Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, the high-powered fashion magazine editor /nightmare lady boss, with Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt as her long-suffering assistants Andrea Sachs and Emily Charlton, respectively. Recently, Elton John’s musical adaptation starring Vanessa Williams began previews in Plymouth, England, in advance of a West End opening in October.
According to Puck, the film’s Oscar-winning producer, Wendy Finerman, has convinced Streep and Blunt to sign on. However, it is unclear if Anne Hathaway is involved as she only recently said in April that she didn’t think a sequel would ever happen.
Additionally, Disney has also apparently given Finerman the greenlight to hire the original film’s screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, as Streep is in.
According to Puck, the storyline of the upcoming movie “being discussed focuses on Miranda Priestly, Streep’s Wintour-esque protagonist, at the end of her career, facing the decline of traditional magazine publishing. She’s forced to go head-to-head with her former assistant, Blunt’s Emily Charlton, now a high-powered executive at a Kering or LVMH-style luxury group, whose advertising dollars Priestly desperately needs.” A rep for Disney has declined to comment on this.
There is also, naturally, no release date yet. We assume that the film is in the early stages of talks.
Fun fact: the fabulous trio reunited earlier this year at the SAG awards:
We’re always sceptical about sequels, so only time will tell if it’s another hit!
