Get To Know British Four-Piece Band Glass Animals
Glass Animals is a British band with members Dave Bayley, Joe Seaward, Ed Irwin-Singer, and Drew MacFarlane. The four talented individuals first hit the music scene in 2014 with their debut album, 'Zaba'.
Recently on 13 November, they released a brand new track called "Tokyo Drifting".
After playing numerous shows across Europe, United States and Australia, the band has finally landed in Malaysia for the first time at Urbanscapes 2019's Unlimited Grooves Festival Closing Party happening at Sentul Depot tonight.
We managed to catch the band's lead singer, songwriter and producer Dave for a quick chat. So let's get to know Glass Animals a little bit better before their show in Kuala Lumpur.
What is the meaning behind the name GLASS ANIMALS?
When the band started, we sat down and thought about what names we could think of that fitted that atmosphere and the sound of the music we were making. Glass Animals was one of the ones that made the most sense. Back then we were making slightly different sounding music to the stuff we make now. It was more delicate and glassy! That is why we ended up going with Glass Animals.
How would you describe GLASS ANIMALS and your music?
I try not to. It’s very difficult to describe music when you have made it…it just sounds like us to me... I think I’m too close to it. I hope that when people listen to it makes them feel things. That is the real test of good music I think. Whether it makes people want to dance, cry, or be angry….if ours does any of those things to people I’ll be very happy.
What are your music influences?
So many things! We listen to so many different kind of music. Hip Hop, afrobeat, RnB, soul. It all influences the music we write.
What inspires your songwriting?
People and experiences.
Name three songs by GLASS ANIMALS a new fan should start with.
I mean, I think you should take one song from every record we have made… So from 'Zaba', go for "Gooey". From 'How To Be A Human Being', I would go for "The Other Side of Paradise" and then our new track "Tokyo Drifting" is the third.
How do you feel about playing in Malaysia?
I feel very excited, I can wait! We have never played in Malaysia before, in fact the only time we have played in Asia is Singapore at a festival, so I’m really looking forward to finding out what kind of crowd you guys are going to be.
What do you love most about touring?
The people we meet and the places we end up going. We are very lucky to do what we do.
How do you feel about the success your music has enjoyed so far?
Very proud. We have worked very hard to get here. We love doing wat we do. Coming to Malaysia for the first time is a really proud moment for us, it's why we do what we do.
