Malaysian movie Sheriff: Narko Integriti has become the highest-grossing local film of 2024, raking in RM22.1 million in just seven days. Some movie-goers love it so much that they watched it three times in cinemas. However, one Kelantan woman took things to the next level by taking a flight all the way to Nilai just to watch the movie.

In a TikTok video, user @tuansyieka, an influencer with 16.1k followers on the social media platform, presumably generates a decent income from selling items on TikTok. She documented her journey boarding a plane from the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Kota Baru, Kelantan, to a cinema in a Mesa Mall in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.

The video's text reads, “No cinemas in Kelantan? No problem. As long as you have money, anything is possible.”

The Cinema ban in Kelantan came into effect when The Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) took over the state's administration from Barisan Nasional (BN) in 1990. In July 2022, the state government maintained that it had no plans to change its policy.

In 2017, Terengganu opened its first cinema in 22 years. However, in 2020, separate zones for males, females, and families were implemented to ensure that all activities follow Syariah law.

A box office hit

Sheriff: Narko Integriti revolves around Sheriff and Nazri, police officers from different departments who come together to take down the ‘Meth Killer’, a ruthless drug lord running a methamphetamine syndicate which resulted in numerous deaths. Directed by Syafiq Yusof, the film also stars Syafiq Kyle, Datuk Aaron Aziz, and Elizabeth Tan.

It continues outdoing itself at the box office, first collecting RM16.3 million in four days and one day of sneak preview. As previously mentioned, it has made RM22.1 million in seven days, and director Syafiq Yusoff also posted about the achievement on his Instagram page.

“The collection of RM22.1 million places Sheriff as the number one local film of 2024,” the executive producer Raja Jastina Raja Arshad said in a statement, saying she was thankful for the “extraordinary” response. “If this encouraging response continues, Insyallah, Sheriff will create another history by achieving extraordinary collections.”

As reported by Malay Mail, Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan is the highest-grossing local film of all time, with RM97 million. Syafiq’s previous film, Polis Evo 3, currently occupies the second spot, with RM54 million.
