Malaysian-Hong Kong Film ‘Mrs. K’ Set for Hollywood Remake
Malaysian films continue to make headlines. Last month, we reported how the film ‘Stone Turtle’ by Woo Ming Jin made history at the prestigious 75th Locarno Film Festival and ‘Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan’ has collected nearly RM100 million at the box office so far.
Martial arts fans will be thrilled to know that six years after its release, Malaysian- Hong Kong flick ‘Mrs. K’ is set to get a Hollywood remake. The action thriller features a middle-aged heroine as its unlikely star, whose ordinary suburban life is disrupted when someone who knows about her murky past shows up. Plus, there’s slow burn family drama, action sequences, and vengeance thrown into the mix.
Through a deal with Universal Pictures, American film production company 87North who produced the ‘John Wick’ franchise starring Keanu Reeves will be making a re-imagining of the film.
They are also behind the current action comedy hit ‘Bullet Train’ starring Brad Pitt which continues to top the American box office. Ho Yuhang, the director of the original film will be onboard as an Executive Producer.
The screenplay will be penned by American author and humourist, Mishna Wolff, who is known for her bestselling memoir ‘I’m Down’. She also wrote the script for ‘Werewolves Within’, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and went on to receive critical acclaim for its screenplay.
She has tweeted about her excitement about the upcoming film:
So excited for Mrs. K. Have to thank Yuhang Ho for trusting me with his amazing film, Mrs. K. She's a dream character, and 87North are producers I have admired since I first saw the stairway scene in Atomic Blonde. https://t.co/qNVnTxqM4Z— mishna wolff (@MishnaW) August 15, 2022
Back in 2016, it was only released in several countries including Singapore and Russia, but went on to become a cult hit, even being officially selected for the Singapore International Film Festival, and nominated for Best Action Choreography in the 53rd Golden Horse Film Awards, Taipei.
It starred an iconic cast including 70s martial arts star Kara Wai, international star Simon Yam, and Taiwanese rock singer and actor Wu Bai.
The original ‘Mrs. K’ was helmed by Malaysian director Ho Yuhang, who was born and raised in PJ and went on to receive critical acclaim for his films ‘Rain Dogs’ and ‘At the End of Daybreak’.
Actor Faizal Hussein, who was listed as Harian Metro by one of the top 10 best Malaysian actors of all time and Dain Iskandar Said, who directed the famous thriller ‘Dukun’ both appeared as villains.
The movie also stars award-winning Actress-singer Ruby Yap who appeared in the independent Hong Kong film ‘Million Loves in Me’. To add to the Malaysian talent in the film, band Fugu created the score.
We can’t wait to see if the Hollywood remake will do the original justice.
