M’sian Director Adele Lim to Helm Highly Anticipated ‘The Princess Diaries 3’
Malaysia has produced its fair share of outstanding directors, such as Taiping-born Jin Ong, whose film ‘Abang Adik’ has garnered international acclaim and Penang-born director Sam Quah, whose film ‘A Place Called Silence’ became China’s second top-grossing summer film of 2024. Now, another Malaysian director has made the country proud by being chosen to direct the highly anticipated third movie of ‘The Princess Diaries’ series. The first movie came out in 2001, followed by a sequel in 2004.
Adele, a Malaysian native of Chinese descent, is a screenwriter, producer, and director best known for writing Crazy Rich Asians. She also wrote the script for Disney’s ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ in 2021, an animated fantasy adventure inspired by Southeast Asian culture, which was Oscar-nominated for Best Animated Film. In 2023, she directed and produced ‘Joy Ride’
As reported by Variety, Adele said, “As a diehard fan of the original ‘Princess Diaries,' I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim said in a statement. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
In an Instagram post, Adele wrote, “SHUT UP!!!(referring to a famous quote from the movie) Here to celebrate the Queens and Princesses in all of us. Over the moon to be back in the Disney family.”
ICYMI Anne Hathaway is confirmed to reprise her role as Princess Mia Thermopolis. Production will officially begin in 2025, but it is unknown when the third movie will be released. Anne also confirmed her participation in a social media post, writing, “Miracles happen.”
We were already excited about the movie, but we're even more so now that we know a Malaysian is directing it. Go, Adele!
