While movie buffs have been buzzing about American films such as The Little Mermaid and Fast X, our own Malaysian Polis Evo 3 has been making its mark domestically and in neighbouring countries. The third film in the buddy cop franchise hit cinemas on 25 May and you can read about our review of the movie here (hint: we loved it).

Just four days after sneak previews and officially hitting theatres in cinemas throughout Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore, Polis Evo 3 has managed to collect a whopping RM16 million at the box office. The movie by Syafiq Yusof has become the highest-grossing film during the opening week after the pandemic, even breaking the record set by the 2022 epic film Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan.

Domestically, it has beat out other heavy hitters such as The Little Mermaid, and Fast X.

For the record, Mat Kilau was directed by his brother, Syamsul Yusof and managed to collect RM12.2 million after four days. For those of you who are still sceptical about the quality of local movies, this shows that there is still support from fans who are looking for films of high standards. Not to mention that another local flick Tiger Stripes just recently took home the Grand Prize at the Cannes’ Critics’ Week.

The buddy cop flick tells the tale of Inspector Khai and Inspector Sani who are back on a new mission. This time, their team is joined by Inspector Dani, Inspector Julie, and Inspector Dell who bring their different expertise to the table. Things get tricky when their next target is Inspector Khai. The friendship between the two is tested when they realise that the new suspect that they are hunting down has ties to Inspector Khai’s past.

Zizan Razak, Shaheizy Sam, Sharnaaz Ahmad, Nora Danish, Syafiq Kyle, Farali Khan, Douglas Lim, Fauzi Nawawi, Fezrul Khan and Eyka Farhana are part of the star-studded cast lineup.

Back when the first Polis Evo film hit cinemas in 2015, it set the record as the first local film to surpass RM18 million at the box office while its sequel in 2018 beat its predecessor by collecting RM23 million.

The cast of Polis Evo 3 is currently on a Meet & Greet tour throughout the country, recently meeting fans on the East Coast during screenings of the movie, where thousands of fans showed up to greet them. Next up, the tour will be heading to Seremban on 2 June, then Kedah, Penang, and Perak on 3,4, and 5 June followed by Singapore, Johor, and Melaka on 8,9, 10, and 11 June.
