Thunderbolts* Review: Marvel's Groundbreaking Film That Redefines the Superhero Genre
In the realm of superhero movies, audiences have grown accustomed to certain clichés: the invincible hero, the clear-cut villain, and the inevitable climactic battle where good triumphs over evil. These films often prioritise spectacle over substance, with character development taking a backseat to explosive action sequences and special effects.
However, Marvel Studios' latest release, ‘Thunderbolts*’, breaks away from these conventions, offering a refreshing and profound take on the superhero genre. This film is not just another addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU); it is a groundbreaking piece that redefines what a superhero movie can be by placing a significant emphasis on mental health.
A new kind of superhero team
‘Thunderbolts*’ introduces us to a team of misfits, each grappling with their own psychological struggles. Unlike the typical superhero ensemble, these characters are not just battling external villains but are also fighting internal demons. This focus on mental health is a refreshing and much-needed shift in the genre, providing a more nuanced and human portrayal of superheroes.

In addition, pne of the standout aspects of ‘Thunderbolts*’ is its deep character development. Each member of the team has a unique backstory that delves into their mental health issues. For instance, we see characters dealing with PTSD, anxiety, and depression, which are portrayed with sensitivity and authenticity. This approach not only makes the characters more relatable but also helps to destigmatise mental health issues.
The film does not shy away from showing the struggles and the impact of these issues on the characters' lives and their ability to function as a team. It also emphasises the importance of seeking help and the power of support systems, which is a crucial message in today's world.
Exceptional performances
The cast of ‘Thunderbolts*’ delivers exceptional performances, bringing depth and authenticity to their roles. The actors portray their characters' vulnerabilities and strengths with equal finesse, making the audience empathise with their struggles. This level of performance is instrumental in conveying the film's message about mental health.
We personally loved the intense backstories of Yelena, played by Florence Pugh, and Bob, aka The Sentry, aka The Void, played by Lewis Pullman. These two characters, in particular, stand out for their complex and emotionally charged narratives. Yelena's journey through trauma and her struggle to find her place in a world that has often been unkind to her is portrayed with raw emotion and sincerity by Pugh. Her performance captures the essence of a character who is both fierce and fragile, making her arc deeply compelling.

Similarly, Lewis Pullman’s portrayal of Bob is nothing short of remarkable. Bob's dual identity as The Sentry and The Void presents a unique challenge, as he battles with his own mind and the destructive force within him. Pullman masterfully navigates this duality, bringing a sense of vulnerability and inner turmoil to the character.
The dynamic between Yelena and Bob is one of the film's highlights. The chemistry between Pugh and Pullman adds an extra layer of authenticity to their characters' journeys, making their story arc one of the most memorable aspects of ‘Thunderbolts*’.
Visual & cinematic excellence
While ‘Thunderbolts*’ excels in its narrative and character development, it does not compromise on the visual and cinematic elements that Marvel is known for. The film features stunning action sequences and special effects, but these are always in service of the story and the characters' journeys. The balance between action and emotional depth is masterfully achieved.

A new standard for superhero films
‘Thunderbolts*’ sets a new standard for superhero films by integrating mental health into its core narrative. It challenges the traditional notions of heroism and strength, showing that true strength lies in acknowledging and addressing one's vulnerabilities. It offers a compelling narrative, deep character development, and exceptional performances, all while maintaining the visual excellence that Marvel is known for.
This film is not just a must-watch for Marvel fans but for anyone who appreciates a thoughtful and impactful story. Malaysian audiences, in particular, should especially watch it for the thrilling scenes involving Merdeka 118 as well as the Kuala Lumpur skyline, adding a unique local touch to the cinematic experience.
