#1 ‘Game of Thrones’ (S1-8)

Winter came and went for the cast members of ‘Game of Thrones’, as the show ended in May with an ending that divided fans and critics. The show, based on George R. R. Martin's fantasy novel, ran from 2011 to 2019 and became a cultural phenomenon. And it looks like the battle for the Throne paid off when they managed to secure a whopping 32 nominations at the Emmys this year. We’ll be dumbfounded if they fail to bag any award. So, will ‘Game of Thrones’ claim its throne at the Emmys this year?
Cast: Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage

#2 ‘Chernobyl’

Integrating nuclear disasters into pop culture is something unheard of, but ‘Chernobyl’ managed to do that. The hit HBO series was based on the real-life Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster in 1986. After the show’s success, many fans flocked to the power plant to take selfies and putting their health and safety at risk. ‘Chernobyl’ received six nominations at the Emmys this year.
Cast: Jessie Buckley, Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Adam Nagaitis, Emily Watson

#3 ‘American Ninja Warrior’ (S8-9)

Who would’ve thought a show adapted from the Japanese TV show ‘Sasuke’ would do so well in America? Participants from all sorts of backgrounds, gender, and race take on the challenge course and compete to see who is worthy of becoming the next ‘American Ninja Warrior’. To date, only three people have completed the course and achieved “total victory”. The show earned two Emmy nominations this year and we’ll see if their ninja moves are enough to help them bring home one or both awards.

#4 ‘The Voice’ (S17)

Reality competitions come and go and ‘The Voice’ seems to have found a place in viewers' hearts with its four-turning-chairs format. Often times, it’s not the contestants that steal the spotlight, but its A-list judges. Blake Shelton is now the longest-running judge on the show, after Adam Levine decided to leave ‘The Voice’ after 16 seasons. Among other stars who have sat on the judges’ chairs are Christina Aguilera, CeeLo Green, Gwen Stefani, Usher, Pharrell, Miley Cyrus, Kelly Clarkson, and Alicia Keys, ‘The Voice’ will also be competing against ‘American Ninja Warrior’ for the ‘Outstanding Competition Program’ category. The 17th season of the show will premiere on 24 September.
Cast: Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson

#5 ‘The Handmaid's Tale’ (S1-3)

‘The Handmaids’s Tale’ is based on the 1985 novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood. The show is set after the US’ civil war where the country was renamed to Gilead where women are treated as second-class citizens. Anyone who tries to escape will be punished. Fertile women are sentenced into becoming handmaids – bearing children for childless government officials or ruling elites. The gripping tale of the handmaids earned the show two Emmy nominations this year.
Cast: Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Joseph Fiennes, Alexis Bledel, Samira Wiley, Madeline Brewer
