#GempakSpot: Thailand Bans Plastic Bags Effective 2020, Thais Get Hilariously Creative On How To Shop
Malaysia celebrated the arrival of 2020 with dismay when it was found that nine tonnes (9,000kg) of trash were collected by 100 Alam Flora personnel after the new year celebration in Kuala Lumpur.
We're pretty sure that a huge lump of it consisted of single-use plastics.
Our neighbouring country Thailand, however, rang in the new year by introducing a nationwide ban on single-use plastic bags at major stores in a bid to reduce waste and debris in the sea, Reuters reported.
The move may be seen as a noble start to the new year but what caught our attention the most was the creativity of the Thai people tackling the plastic bag-less issue.
Normally, we will opt to bring our own plastic or reusable bag but for the Thais, they not only went all out but over-the-top, using unusual items such as a cage, a wheelbarrow, a vase, a pot, a clothes hanger, and many more.
The images have gone viral all over social media and one tweet even got over 76,000 retweets while another Facebook post has received over 112,000 shares to date.
The Thais obviously have a great sense of humour but we know that it’s a one-off thing, you know, just to make fun of the whole situation.
Perhaps Malaysia should also follow suit, because it’s about time we start reducing our consumption of single-use plastics for a better world.
