14 Things We Can All Relate To Watching 'Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers' On RTM1
Remember checking the TV Guides in the newspaper for the airtime of your show? Oh man, we’re going way back with this one.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers first aired in 1993. Those of us young enough to remember this TV show should be, at minimum, four-years-old at the time. That would make you… 28! The show did run until 1995, so you’re most likely in your late 20s or early 30s.Since the first season, there have been 22 versions of Power Rangers with different subtitles like, Turbo, Zeo, Ninja Storm, and Mystic Force to name a few. We’re purists here and we want to look at the experiences we all felt watching the first ever Mighty Morphin Power Rangers here in Malaysia on RTM1… 6pm, probably.
As a child, it was a confusing time, followed by 30 minutes of pure awesome.
All the somersaulting action of the ‘90s and Hong Kong martial arts movies made some primary school Taekwondo teachers very rich. Six years of classes later and not a single backflip.
“It’s morphin’ time!”
You played the tune in your head while seeing this GIF didn’t you? Don’t lie.
That’s the Megazord riding on the Titanus. They just look like high fidelity toys in the opening title, but the ones on store shelves never looked that good.
Like, it was pretty touch and go there. Jason didn’t have his communicator! He couldn’t morph!
“Aiya-ya-ya-yai”
In the lore, Tommy Oliver is turned into the Green Ranger by Rita and is brainwashed. He is freed from the spell and transfers them to Jason, the Red Ranger. In Season 2, Rita with Lord Zedd, retrieve the Green Ranger power, creates a clone of Tommy to fight the rangers. While this is happening, Alpha 5 and Zordon create the White Ranger in secret to replace the Green Ranger. Phew.
At the time, our tiny non-newspaper reading brains didn’t know that on December 1995, the Deputy Home Minister Megat Junid Megat Ayub said that the words “Mighty Morphin” might cause children to associate the characters with the drug morphine, leading them to believe the drug could make them strong like the characters on the show. SMH, 12 years later we’re still banning trivial things in children’s movies. It was eventually allowed back on the air with the word “morphin” deleted to protect impressionable ‘adult’ minds.
And then doing all these nonsensical hand swooshes. “E-yah!” “E-yaaahhh!”
Don’t worry, it’s actually a lot worse than you remember.
Ah, Kimberly. Every young man’s first crush. Amy Jo Johnson is 47-years-old now and played the part of Kimberly Hart from 1993 to 1995.
Yes, go back and rewatch it. They're worlds apart in terms of visuals. The American filmed production compared to the stock footage from Japan are miles apart. Apparently, the scripts were written around stock footage available at the time.
