This Malaysian Director's RM2,000 Short Film Makes It To New York's Tribeca Film Festival
Malaysian director/cinematographer/photographer Darius Shu and team proved that you don't always need a big budget and fancy sets to make a good film.
Working with only £400 (RM2,000), Shu and co-director Arron Blake created ‘His Hands’, a silent psychological thriller that was picked to be screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
The film was one of 63 films that was chosen out of 5,000 submissions to be screened at the prestigious event.
It took three people – Shu, Blake (who also wrote and acted in the film) and actor Philip Brisebois – four days to complete the movie.
The story revolves around Blake and Brisebois, two strangers of differing ages, meeting under strange circumstances.
Within 13 minutes, the film explores several topics including ageism and loneliness – things many people go through and can easily relate to.
“The film offers a stimulating and exhilarating vision of the world and the dark and dangerous society in which we live.
“It has a strong visual language that is consistent throughout and incorporates symbolic ‘poetry’ in its framing, lighting and composition,” Shu said in a statement.
He was also the cinematographer for the film and helped develop the script.
