Malaysian Documentary 'M For Malaysia' Heading To The Busan Film Festival

Yet another Malaysian-made production has made it to an international film festival.

This time, it's a feature documentary called 'M for Malaysia', which will be one of the 303 films from 85 countries that will be screened at the Busan International Film Festival - arguably one of the most recognised film festivals in Asia.

303 may sound like a lot, but considering the number of movies released each year all over the world, being selected for any festival is not an easy feat.

Previously, the film was also selected to be screened at two international film festivals: the 2019 CAAMFest and the 2019 DocEdge Film Festival.

Directed by Ineza Roussille and Dian Lee, 'M For Malaysia' tells the story of the historic 2018 General Elections where the previous government were overthrown after 60 years in power.

The focus of the documentary is on Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the final 16 days of his campaign leading up to the elections.

While that is the main part of the film, there's a lot of interesting bits about Malaysian history - from Ops Lalang to the beginning of Reformasi movement - in the film.

The documentary also gives viewers an unprecedented, behind-the-scenes look at the historic moment when we Malaysians made history together.

The documentary's co-director and 'accidental' producer Dian Lee told Rojak Daily that ​when she first embarked on this project, her mentor Ruby, a fellow filmmaker, always cautioned that it is difficult to get into film festivals.

"So, getting into Busan is a huge win for the film. We are very proud to share this Malaysian story with the world.

"Democracy and universal suffrage is an important topic around the world, so I think as Malaysians, we should be very proud of how far we have come and achieved as a nation," she said.

We wish the team best of luck and hope the deature documentaries will be a hit at the festival held in South Korea next month.
