The first movie, directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, and Idris Elba, revolves around a war between humans and sea monsters. To fight against them, humans have to rely on powerful machines called Jaegers.

The movie was an unexpected hit, raking in US$411 million (RM1.6 billion) worldwide.
Naturally, a sequel was expected. But then word went around that a possible Pacific Rim 2 would be shelved, leaving fans wondering whether it will happen or not.Finally, there are some news. The production of the film will begin at the end of this year, with Guillermo del Toro producing and Steven S. DeKnight directing. DeKnight is known for directing Buffy the Vampire Slayer and was one of the showrunners for Daredevil.

It has also been confirmed that John Boyega, who played the former Stormtrooper-turned-hero, Finn, in Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens will be taking on the lead role of Stacker Pentecost's son (played by Elba).
