10 New Shopping Malls In The Klang Valley To Check Out In 2017

At the rate that new shopping malls are popping up in the Klang Valley, you’d get the impression that Malaysians are all shopaholics. Many pundits have actually expressed surprise at the launching of more than two dozen new malls in 2016 alone, given the current economic climate.

However, it seems that as Malaysians, we’ll never give up our shopping sessions no matter what, so if you live in the Klang Valley, it’s always very exciting when a new mall opens up near you.

Here are some shopping spots that have just opened up or are going to open its doors pretty soon:

1. Sunway Velocity, Cheras

This spanking new mall is located just a stone’s throw away from the Maluri and Miharja LRT station and opened in early December 2016 to much fanfare. It features a TGV cinema, and an upscale AEON MaxValu Prime supermarket that sells imported products. The lower ground floor has plenty of eateries, both chain restaurants and one standalone shop, as well as snack stands worth checking out. If you’re looking for more affordable meals, there’s a food court on the 4th floor that features both local and international cuisine.

2. MyTOWN Shopping Centre, Cheras

MyTOWN is a new shopping mall that is connected to IKEA Cheras and shares the same building complex. Owned and developed by Boustead Holdings Berhad and Ikano Pte. Ltd, MyTOWN will feature almost 500 shops, with a GSC cinema and Village Grocer supermarket. Brands like Uniqlo and Mango are set to make an appearance as well, and there will be ample parking space for visitors with 6,500 parking lots available. The opening date was scheduled in Noevember 2016, bit has been pushed back and is expected to open by the end of March 2017.

3. Evolve Concept Mall, Ara Damansara

Evolve Concept Mall was built to cater to the increasing population around Ara Damansara and to take advantage of the new Ara Damansara MRT station in the vicinity. Although a little difficult to find off the main LDP road, it spells convenience for the many people staying nearby as they’ve traditionally had to drive really far to Paradigm Mall or to One Utama. Anchor tenants include Jaya Grocer, Celebrity Fitness, Foodzine foodcourt and LOGO. It’s a pretty family friendly place and the management takes pains to organize weekly events like clearance sales, food festivals, children’s play gyms and much more.

4. The Starling, Damansara Uptown

The busy business and commercial district of Damansara Uptown has seen the opening of a new mall in early 2017, right smack in the middle of the area. The malls consists of five storeys where you’ll find brands like Jaya Grocer, Ace Hardware, Nichii, Popular Bookstore and eateries like The The Tarik place, Mr Tuk Tuk and many more. Basically, it’s a pretty convenient stopover for anyone who’s working in the area as you can drop by easily to pick up household necessities or run errands. There’s also a gym in the mall called Chi-X where you can stop by for an after office hours workout. Drivers can breathe a sigh of relief as there’s a direct tunnel from the mall leading to the LDP, which means you won’t have to encounter the horrendous Uptown Damansara jam during peak hours. The mall design incorporates lots of greenery and elements of nature, so you can chill out and take a break from the demands of corporate life.

5. Glo Damansara

Although rather moderate in size with only about 200 shops available, Glo is a convenient shopping spot that is an alternative to Tropicana City Mall nearby. The main anchor tenant here is Ben’s Independent Grocer, which is an upscale supermarket with a café attached to it. There are also several eateries that are opened in the mall, including The Tranquerah which features Nyonya cuisine. Parking is available, but slightly pricey at RM10 for three hours. You’d be better off taking the adjacent TTDI MRT to reach it.

6. KL Gateway Mall, Bangsar South

Just next to the Universiti LRT station is a new shopping experience called KL Gateway Mall, which is part of the Bangsar South commercial and business area. Many international brands have made KL Gateway their home, including H&M, Pierre Cardin, Polo Club and The Village Grocer as the main supermarket. The electric atmosphere here is also due to its modern and airy design. Accessibility is great, as there are two LRT stations nearby, namely Universiti and Kerinchi, and you can also drive there as it's just off the Federal Highway after the turnoff to the Kerinchi Link. The mall is part of a mixed development and is also linked to corporate and residential blocks.

7. Star Avenue, Jalan Sungai Buloh

Located in Shah Alam’s Seksyen U5, this is a mall you can drive to from either Subang Jaya or Shah Alam. It’s about five minutes from the old Subang Airport and the nearest train station is KTM Sungai Buloh. The mall is designed to cater to residents in Subang Bestari, Sungai Buloh, Bukit Rahman Putra and students from the new HELP University campus. In line with its target to provide services to youths and young adults, it features a sizable IT zone selling gadgets and offering repair services and other services.

8. Selayang City Mall, Selayang

Those living in the northern part of the Klang Valley will be very glad for another mall, and this one is scheduled for the second half or the end of 2017. Although not much is known about their tenants, its would appear that this mall will insert a touch of modernity and liveliness in Selayang. It’s located along Jalan Ipoh and can be accessed by several main highways. One anchor tenant reported to open there is a Japanese brand supermarket, so look out for it.

9. Pavillion 2, Bukit Jalil City

Along the Bukit Jalil Highway heading towards Puchong is a new mixed development project with commercial lots and residential apartments called Bukit Jalil City. Of course, there will also be a mall called the Pavillion Bukit Jalil, which is huge and features more than 2 million square feet of shops, eateries and other stores. Since it’s under the same people who brought us Pavillion mall in KL’s Golden Triangle, we can expect plenty of luxury brands, as well as all other standard mall offerings like cinemas and other entertainment outlets. Pavillion 2 is scheduled to open in the second half of 2017.

10. Damen, USJ

Opened in 2016, this new mall is located next to Summit USJ. Shoppers can take advantage of the premium brands that have opened here like Popular Bookstore, Shins and others. There’s a uniquely laid out food and dining area on the Lower Ground floor that looks like a mini food festival with various booths. It’s also a great place to get errands done as there are of hair saloons, clothing stores and more. There are also entertainment outlets for kids and a Jaya Grocer supermarket.
