We've seen plenty of videos online showing people trying to reserve parking spots by standing in them. In some residential areas, some even resort to placing random objects such as traffic cones or chairs to 'claim' a parking space as their own.

While 'chup parking' has been recognised as an illegal act in Malaysia, some people still seem unwilling to comply with the rules.

In a video that has since gone viral online, a Malaysian woman known as Shezlina said she and her husband decided to step in after witnessing a blue Mercedes-Benz trying to park in a spot where the two women were standing.

Despite being honked at and repeatedly told to move, the two women refused to do so.

The situation soon became heated. According to Shezlina, the women later claimed that they were born in Malaysia and were familiar with the country's rules. They also allegedly said they possessed Malaysian Identification Cards (ICs).

Eventually, the driver of the blue Mercedes left the scene without taking the parking spot.

Netizens react

Unsurprisingly, many Malaysians were unhappy with the women's behaviour.

"I'd just drive in. Why should I give in to them and waste my energy confronting them? If they refuse to move, just honk at them. There's nothing wrong with that. These white immigrants should be put in their place. This is our country."

Meanwhile, others pointed out that the blue Mercedes may also have been in the wrong, as the vehicle appeared to be driving against the direction indicated by the arrow markings.

However, some users came to the driver's defence, saying that the traffic flow within the KLCC car park can be confusing.

'Chup-ing' parking can get you fined up to RM2,000

For context, reserving parking spaces, whether by standing in them or placing objects to block them off, is an offence under Section 50(3) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

First-time offenders can be fined up to RM2,000, imprisoned for up to six months, or both.

For subsequent offences, offenders may face fines of up to RM4,000, imprisonment of up to 12 months, or both.
