Have you ever driven past an abandoned house or building and think to yourself: 'Hmm, I wonder if this place has a dark backstory to it?'.
While chances are most of these abandoned places were just, well, abandoned by their owners, there are those that have a sinister backstory behind them.
Of course, we can't be 100 per cent certain if those stories are true, but hey, where there is smoke, there must be a fire, right?
Here are five abandoned places in Malaysia that have a dark, creepy and even downright paranormal backstory:

#1 99 Door Mansion, Nibong Tebal

Yep, it does look creepy. So, what's the story? Located in a seculded oil palm plantation in Nibong Tebal, this mansion was once home to a wealthy family named the Ramsdens. Also known as the Byram Estate, the mansion got its name from the ninety nine doors you'll find in the property. Its owner, one John St. Maur Ramsden, was the managing director of the Penang Rubber Estate Group at the time.
Full of creeps. Who knows where this door leads to. However, in 1948, Ramsden was reportedly shot twice in the back of the head as he was climbing one of the stairs in the mansion, instantly killing him. Despite a series of court trials, the murder remains unsolved and the gunman was never found.
After being abandoned for more than 50 years, it was rumoured that a local witch doctor used the mansion to conjure evil and unspeakable things.
Got ghost or not? Well, the 99 Door Mansion was the scene of an unsolved murder and the site of a devil worshipping, so it wouldn't surprise anyone if the place is haunted. According to urban legends, there are sightings of unexplained figures roaming the hallway of this abandoned mansion.
There were also reports of unexplained sounds and growls coming from the site. And more recently, the mansion mysteriously caught fire.
So, yeah; we're pretty sure there are plenty of creepy beings lepaking in the mansion.

#2 Taman Tenaga Bungalow, Puchong

It does look haunted. So, what's the story? This may look like an ordinary abandoned bungalow, but don't let that fool you: the Taman Tenaga Bungalow will make your skin crawl.
Located on top of a hill in Puchong, it was once owned by a wealthy Chinese businessman (of course it is).
Go here if you dare. The staircase to hell? So, the story goes that the businessman was heavily in debt with loan sharks, and because of that, the man and his family killed themselves.
However, there were different versions of the story; the family slit their own throats, the family hung themselves, the family was killed by someone living in the same house, but the ending was the same: the family perished.
Got ghost or not? There were rumours that local bomohs use the bungalow for dark magic practices, and what Hollywood ghost stories have taught us is that these places sure got a lot of hantu. There were reports of lights turning on and off by themselves despite there being no power supply, and resident nearby swear that they've heard screams of children and sightings of shadowy figures roaming around the compound.
Nope, thank you. There were also sightings of pontianaks, and a photo taken by a group of friends purportedly showing the head of a smiling woman on top of a tree has been the hot topic on the internet for years.

#3 Bukit Gasing Mansion, Petaling Jaya

This mansion has an intriguing story. So, what's the story? It seems like abandoned bungalows are hot spots for creepy happenings, and the Bukit Gasing Mansion is no different.
Story has it that this sprawling mansion, located in Petaling Jaya, was the location of a grisly murder involving the owner, his wife and his mistress. According to rumours, the owner of the mansion had an affair, and when his wife found out, well, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
This looks creepy AF. The woman flew into a rage and murdered the mistress, before decapitating her and hanging her head on the front door. When he stumbled upon the scene, the man was said to have had a heart attack, and he died on the spot. The wife, meanwhile, hung herself on the balcony the very next day.
Gruesome.
Got ghost or not? Well, this one is still up for debate. While there weren't any documented sighthings of ghoulies or pontianaks, those who live near the Bukit Gasing Mansion would agree that the sight of it, especially at night, is enough to send chills down anyone's spine.

#4 SK Danau Perdana, Kuala Lumpur

No wonder some kids don't like schools. So, what's the story? Back in the day, we were called 'anak hantu' because of how naughty we were in school. But for this school in Kuala Lumpur, a hantu actually haunts the place (according to urban legends lah).
SK Danau Perdana was once a pretty populated school, with a total of 265 students and nine classes. The school were pretty active in competitions too, as they took part in various zone and state competitions.
Looks fine from the outside, but inside... Definitely creepy. But in 2004, the school was forced to shut down due to safety issues of the building. Now, its empty classrooms, crumbling walls filled with graffiti and chilling walkways are home to drug addicts and a certain being from the other world.
Got ghost or not? If rumours were to be believed, a pontianak calls SK Danau Perdana home. The pontianak was said to be a cleaner who died during childbirth, but looking at how creepy the place looks, we doubt anyone is brave enough to go in and ask her to verify her identity.

#5 Villa Nabila, Johor Bharu

Looking at the picture already gave us a creep. So, what's the story? If you thought the abandoned mansions and bungalows listed above were scary, wait till you hear about the infamous Villa Nabila.
Located on top of a hill overlooking the Danga Bay in Johor, there were a lot of mystery surrounding the sprawling place. Nobody knows who the owner of the place is, although many speculated that it belonged to a wealthy family, who named it after their only daughter named Nabila.
Enter if you dare. Why do people even go in there? Depending on who you ask, there are a few different versions of the tragic tale, but the most famous one involves a jealous maid murdering the entire family because she wanted to keep the family heirloom.
The maid was said to have murdered Nabila and had her body cemented into the walls of the house. The bodies of the other family members, meanwhile, were rumoured to have been buried in the compound of Villa Nabila.
Got ghost or not? Villa Nabila has been listed as one of the most haunted places not only in Malaysia, but in Asia, so we're guessing some spooky stuff must happen there almost every day for the Villa to get that title.
The news that shook the nation. There were numerous stories about thrill-seekers going missing when they foolishly decide to investigate the place, including this really creepy story of a group of 23 people who went missing after tresspassing into the place.
There were also stories of a lady in white appearing in photographs taken by those who dared to take pictures in a creepy place.
The mystery of Villa Nabila was so captivating, someone even made a horror movie out of it in 2015.
So, have you heard about these creepy stories before?
