You’ve got a wide array of Ipoh white coffee available at every nook and corner of the city, a delectable selection of hawker food (read: nasi ganja, chee chong fun), kopitiams, cooling ice balls (ais kepal), and never-ending interesting buildings and murals to explore!
The city of Ipoh will not only help fill up your happy tummy, it’ll also help fill up your Instagram feed! It’s basically a haven for both food lovers and Instagram addicts.
So, here are a few places you should cross off your list when you visit Ipoh. To all Instagram husbands, may the force be with you!
#1 Ipoh Old Town

If you’re familiar with Ernest Zacharevic’s art installations in Georgetown, Penang, you’ll probably fall in love with the ones he has done in Ipoh too. The Lithuanian street artist collaborated with Old Town White Coffee for a project called #TheArtOfOLDTOWN. There is a total of seven unique murals all over Ipoh, so now it’s your job to hunt them down and take pictures! And no, we’re not going to tell where they're all located at :p
#2 Ipoh Railway Station

How to travel back in time without a time machine? Visit the Ipoh railway station! This white, colonial beauty stands proudly in the heart of Ipoh. It has also become a landmark of the city and serves a purpose too – transporting people via the KTM service. The station was initially built for a hospital before being turned into a station. Did you know that the movie Anna and the King was also shot here?
#3 Concubine Lane

Laden with vibrant historical and cultural gems, this lane is definitely one where you wouldn’t mind if someone tells you to “stay in your lane.” You can find an abundance of hipster cafes as well as boutique hotels around the area, which is very convenient if you’d like to play tourist for a day. There’s also a handful of art installations in the area so you can add them to your checklist. Psst, did you know this was where rich Chinese tycoons used to keep their mistresses? Now that makes this place even more mysterious!
#4 Tasik Cermin (Mirror Lake)

Getting to this lake requires a little bit of adventure – which everyone loves. The hidden oasis is located at a quarry that you requires you to get your Dora The Explorer thinking cap on if you want to get there (Trust us, it’s not that easy). Not only that, you might feel a jolt of adrenaline rush as you will feel like you’re trespassing private land, but don't worry, you’re not. Nestled among limestone formations, this lake will instantly transport you to another ethereal world upon first look. So, it IS worth the hunt!
#5 Pasar Karat/Memory Lane

If you want to know the real definition of “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure”, then head to Pasar Karat or Memory Lane Ipoh. This weekend flea market is filled with an array of lost treasures that you might be interested in – vintage clothing, antique items, stuff that you probably never knew existed, and even old school electronics. You’d be amazed at all the rare finds that’ll give you an exciting insight of the past.
#6 Kong Heng Square

Sekeping Kong Heng, Kong Heng Kopitiam, Plan B, ais kepal, love locks, cute little shops selling unique bits and bops, tonnes of Instagram worthy buildings and walls, and a spectrum of ornate decorations complimenting every hipster café can all be found at this square. Need we say more? This place alone can kawtim your Instagram photoshoot for the day.
