But over the years, some of us are tired of hearing about the same beach escapades in Thailand a thousand times over, like Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui. In fact, these repeated destinations have become overcrowded with tourists almost all-year round.
So if you dislike crowds and want your Instagram feed to look different from other common travellers, here are some of the more underrated beaches in Thailand you would appreciate.
Koh Lao Liang
Located in Southern Thailand, this remote island is one of Thailand’s best-kept secrets. Exclusivity is an understatement when you visit Koh Lao Liang because only 50 people can stay there at any one time. While there are no bungalows and resorts in sight, tourists stay in upscale camping tents overlooking the sea that are eco-friendly, spacious and comfortable. It’s basically glamping by the beach! Koh Lao Liang is also famous for rock climbing thanks to the soaring limestone cliff towers. If that’s not your thing, you can arrange boat tours offshore to explore the colourful reefs and vibrant sea life.
Nai Harn Beach
Nai Harn Beach is located on Phuket. Now, don’t beat us up just yet for suggesting this popular tourist destination. The island, after all, is full of beautiful beaches and resorts. But with a little research and insider information, you will find the perfect spot that is more isolated than the rest of the island, namely Nai Harn Beach. Situated at the southern tip of Phuket, it is a local favourite when it comes to snorkeling because it is much quieter. The stretch of beach also has a handful of hotels along a thick, forest shore. So take a bit of time and venture off the beaten path, especially away from the tourist stampede.
Koh Kood (Koh Kut)
Koh Kood is located at the far east coast of Thailand, just before Cambodia. With a population of only about 2,500, people come here to relish in the peace and serenity. Since much of the island is still not developed and inhabited, there are plenty of hidden bays, waterfalls, hiking trails, and deserted beaches to explore here. Some say that the beaches here are similar to those of the Maldives. What more could you ask for?
Railay Beach
Railay Beach is often unheard of but popular among climbing junkies because of its limestone rock formations sticking out from the clear blue waters. While visitors here often reach towards the sky through the various climbing routes, the sugary sandy beach here often remains desolated, unlike the other beaches located at the rest of Krabi. Located a mere 15-minute boat ride from Ao Nang, Railay has a small trip of restaurants, bars, budget stays, and luxury resorts for travellers to indulge in. besides rock climbing, you can also explore the caves and jungle trails here for a more exhilarating holiday.
Koh Chang
Thailand’s second largest island, Koh Chang, is the less famous and crowded sister of Phuket. Situated near the Cambodian border, the island is known for its national park that is well-protected by thick forests and rocky bays. Visit the island’s west coast for white sandy beaches, appropriately called Lonely Beach. Here lies one of the best spots to enjoy some alone time in the sun, sand and sea. If you’re an avid snorkeler and diver, take a boatride to one of the smaller islands just off the southern coast of Koh Chang.
Koh Mak
After Koh Chang, Koh Mak is the lesser-known sibling that is practically undiscovered. Almost the whole island is privately owned by five different families who make sure that the developments here remain local. It is so exclusive that you won’t even find ATMs here due to the non-existence of international banks. Situated in the National Marine Park in Eastern Thailand, the terrain on the island is mostly flat and the atmosphere low in carbon, so it makes the best of cycling trails. Instead of the typical night-life like that of Pattaya, Koh Mak is famed for outdoor activities such as windsurfing, snorkeling and kayaking.
Koh Ngai (Koh Hai)
Koh Ngai is an island in the Krabi Province just off Koh Lanta, also known for – you guessed it – white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters that are great for snorkelling straight from the shore. Nature lovers would appreciate this island for the breathtaking forests and wildlife. You can also go jungle trekking to get a better view of the island and find your way to Paradise Beach. The laid-back atmosphere here is literally a piece of paradise. While there is not much to do on this island because of the tranquility, it is the perfect island getaway for some peace and quiet.
