7 Weekend Getaways In Malaysia For Less Than RM100 Per Night

So there goes your dream of reaching home early and spending that extra hour playing Overwatch before bedtime. You know you’re at your limit. Your nerves are raw and you’re feeling mentally fatigued from the strains of everyday life.

You know it’s time to take a break. But your bank account isn’t exactly bursting at the seams, and you can’t afford to take that many days off. Your best bet is a quick weekend getaway to somewhere quiet and within your budget, just to get away from the hustle and bustle for a few days and recharge.

There are many lesser known budget getaways around the country, and here are some that you can retreat to for less than RM100 per person per night.

1) The Kabin, Jeram (Starting at RM72 per pax)

You’ll find The Kabin on the road to Kuala Selangor from Kuala Lumpur, and the place is less than an hour’s drive from the city. Rooms start at RM290 for four bunk beds, so you can grab some friends and split the bill. Rooms are made of old shipping containers, and you’ll be able to spend time at the pool, the Karaoke room or have a barbeque at the outdoor grill.

If you would like to explore the surroundings, you can rent a bike from the hotel, or even rent a double kayak or stand-up paddle board to use at the nearby beach.

2) Time Capsule Retreat, Sungai Lembing (Starting at RM 70 per pax)

Pahang holds many secrets, and you can find this gem in the small town of Sungai Lembing. The Time Capsule Retreat grounds are surrounded by lush forests and there are three types of accommodations to choose from.

The most unique ones would be the cylindrical capsule rooms made of re-purposed giant concrete pipes. Each capsule room sleeps a maximum of two people and prices start at RM139 per capsule.

Sungai Lembing town is a five-minute drive or 10-15 minute walk away where visitors can find restaurants, convenience stalls and some interesting attractions like the Sungai Lembing museum. 3) Tadom Hill Resorts, Banting, Selangor ( Starting at RM65 per pax)

It may be called a resort, but it’s actually an eco friendly nature’s retreat made almost entirely out of bamboo. Guests can choose to sleep in simple hammocks, tents or choose bamboo huts that offer protection from the elements.

The resort offers a slew of activities for guests, including group barbecues at night as well as sporting equipment that can be used within the resort’s vicinity including basketball, football and volleyball. There are also land and water activities you can participate in like flying fox, abseiling, Tarzan swings, bamboo rafts, and so much more.

Tadom Hill was built with nature in mind, and the green philosophy behind it is to preserve the indigenous Tenom land it’s built on, with as little carbon footprint as possible. Many of the Orang Asli that live in nearby Kampung Bukit Tadom are also employed here. The entire system is designed to be sustainable for the long term.

4) The Sticks, Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor ( Starting at RM70 per pax)

The sleepy town of Kuala Kubu Bharu is only about 40 minutes away from the city, but not many people venture here. Apart from some hot springs, the town itself consists of only several rows of pre-war shop houses. It’s quiet and rustic, something that will get you in the mood to kick back and not answer phone calls or WhatsApp messages.

The Sticks provides full board and half board meals so you don’t have to leave the camp and venture out to town for food. There are also a host of activities provided on-site like jungle trekking, nature walks, board games and paragliding.

The Sticks provide huts called ‘Tendoks’ which are a cross between tents and ‘pondoks’ or wooden shelters. The most basic Tendok can be rented for a starting price of between RM140-RM180, depending on the season and each sleeps two adults. You can opt for more luxurious accommodations with attached bathrooms and other comforts for slightly more. There’s a flowing river on the grounds, so you won’t be bored and can take a soak when it gets hot.

5) Tanjung Inn, Cherating, Pahang ( Starting at RM35 per pax)

There are many beautiful beaches on the East Coast, and on the borders of Pahang and Terengganu, you’ll find Tanjung Inn. It’s a holiday spot built near the sea and surrounding a lake. They’ve got many lodging options, starting with tents around a pond that are only RM70 a night and fits two.

There are also rooms with fans called Tanjung Digs which are RM100 a night and chalets with all the modern comforts for about RM180 a night. These work out to less than RM 100 per person per night, which is extremely affordable.

Apart from roaming around the beautiful Tanjung Inn grounds, visitors can rent fishing boats at the nearby Cherating river and cast a hook or two. It’s also possible to take a stroll or a swim in the nearby Cherating Beach and go bird watching.

6) Wind Paradise, Kundasang, Sabah ( Starting at RM 85 per pax)

If you’ve always wanted to visit Mongolia and run with the ponies on the Mongolian steppes, but somehow just haven’t found the chance, here’s a closer alternative. About 2.8 km or about nine minutes drive from Kundasang town is a bunch of Mongolian Yurts or tents called Wind Paradise.

You can rent a regular indoor room for two for only RM170 per night, or a full round yurt that can fit three to four people for RM250- RM300 per night while enjoying the cooling breeze on the mountainous Kundasang region. Plus all rooms and yurts come with attached toilets and bathrooms with their own heated water.

There are many activities to pursue around Kundasang, including farm visits, and a visit to Kinabalu Park which is only 15 minutes away. Poring hot springs is only 45 minutes away and the Kundasang War Memorial and gardens are nearby too.

7) Bamboo Village, Hulu Langat, Selangor (Starting at RM 45 per pax)

Back to nature also means back to basics. Bamboo Village is one of those places you go when you just don’t want to be reminded of the trappings of modern life. Ironically enough, it’s located at Hulu Langat, which is pretty near to KL.

The website is pretty clear about the fact that Bamboo Village is a nature retreat and there aren’t any air-conditioners in the rooms. Bathrooms are shared in a common area and you can rent whole cottages for about RM120 (fits groups of five or more) or book yourself a spot in the dorm for just RM45 a night.

Bamboo Village allows you to stay for even cheaper if you volunteer to work daily for three to five hours daily. If you volunteer for more than seven days, you stay absolutely free. However if you’re here to get away from work, you can dabble in some jungle trekking or visit nearby hot springs and waterfalls.

If you’re not an outdoorsy person, you can always hang out in the common areas where you can interact with other visitors, or take a dip in the wading pool. Meals are communally prepared in the open air kitchen or visitors can pop out to the nearby town for a meal.
