Agoda, one of the world’s largest accommodation booking platforms, has discovered some of the reasons driving the rise in what is known as non-hotel accommodation, also known as homestays.

The platform analysed its inventory of over 1.5 million properties worldwide over the years and revealed the booking behaviours of travelers today.

Travelers are more likely to stay in a home when they’re closer to home

People are more likely to book homestays whenever they travel within their home countries. But they are also open to booking private homes or apartments when they travel to neighbouring countries.

However, the reasons for choosing the type of accommodation varies across different countries.

More than half of Malaysian (54%), Indonesian (55%) and Filipino (53%) travelers tend to book non-hotel accommodation to accommodate families and large groups. This goes to show how much we love travelling in groups because sharing is caring!

As for travelers from Singapore (57%), Thailand (54%) and Australia (46%), they view non-hotel accommodation as a more affordable option as opposed to a hotel room.

Mainland Chinese (55%) travelers, who tend to be more adventurous, would consider booking these types of accommodation to get a more local travel experience as a whole.

In general, there is a clear trend in the most popular type of non-hotel accommodation booked in different countries.

B&Bs ranked first for Filipino travelers, with 53% of those surveyed having booked one in the past year.

Private homes are among the favorites for travelers from Singapore (44%), Malaysia (40%) and Australia (38%).

Villas and guest houses are well liked by Indonesian (37% and Thai (31%) travelers.
