What are Air soles: The original idea for the Air soles came from aerospace engineer Marion Franklin Rudy who suggested to Phil Knight (the co-founder of Nike) to put tiny air bags in the soles shoes to soften impact.

Air Max 1 was followed up by the Air Max Light in 1989 and in 1990, the iconic Air Max 3 or Air Max 90 as we know today was born. At the time, it was as much popular as a running shoe as it was a fashion statement. Australian distance runner (and Commonwealth gold medalist) Steve Moneghetti was an early advocate for the shoe.

The line's enduring popularity since 1987 caused Nike to create a holiday around it called Air Max Day every March 26th, which was the launch of the Air Max 1. This year, the line is celebrating its 36th birthday and it released the Nike Air Max 1 Big Bubble ‘86 ‘University Red’. As the name suggests, it is the original design of the Air Max 1 which first materialised in 1986, before the official launch in 1987 but was never sold.
