The journey to the resort itself is an experience to remember, as the route will take you off the busy highways and through the small towns around Lumut. As you drive along the scenic coastal road, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the Straits of Malacca.

The sight of the shimmering blue waters and the gentle sea breeze create a sense of tranquillity even before you reach your destination while also setting the stage for the relaxing and enjoyable stay that awaits you.

From the moment you arrive at DoubleTree by Hilton Damai Laut, you'll be greeted with a warm welcome that sets the tone for your stay. The friendly staff are dedicated to ensuring that every guest feels at home.

The resort's commitment to hospitality is evident in the little touches that make a big difference. We were greeted with the warm signature DoubleTree chocolate chip cookie upon arrival, which added a sweet start to our vacation.

Right after we checked in, we were brought to the exclusive Executive Lounge (accessible only to those who were staying in the resort’s Executive Rooms), where we were greeted with a welcome drink of our choice.

With their genuine warmth and professionalism, the team at DoubleTree by Hilton Damai Laut ensures that your family getaway is not only enjoyable but also stress-free. In fact, the hotel's award-winning hospitality was recognised as the Best New Resort in Malaysia by the 2024 Haute Grandeur Global Hotel Awards.

The room & overall aesthetics

DoubleTree by Hilton Damai Laut Resort boasts 294 guest rooms, all fitted with private balconies offering views of either the sea or the forest, spread across three blocks. The resort’s architecture is inspired by traditional Malaysian aesthetics, blended with modern tropical resort design. It features open-air spaces, natural materials, and a seamless connection with the surrounding landscape.

The expansive sea-facing rooms and open layouts maximise natural light and ocean breezes, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. Lush gardens and wooden accents reflect Malaysia’s rich heritage, adding a touch of local charm and beauty. All these elements make DoubleTree by Hilton Damai Laut a perfect resort for families as the spacious rooms and open layouts provide ample space for family activities and relaxation.

We stayed in the King Executive Room with Sea View, which offered an amazing view of the resort's pool area and an unobstructed view of the sea. Thankfully, our room was located in the main block, meaning we didn’t have to walk too far to the hotel’s dining areas and pools.

The rooms include a mini-fridge, high-definition television, and high-speed internet access, while the bathroom boasts a separate rain shower and toilet, along with a grand marble sink. During our stay, we experienced issues with our air conditioning. However, the staff were quick to respond and offered us a room change, ensuring our comfort and satisfaction.

As part of our experience, we were treated to a tour of the resort’s Eforea Spa, which was recognised as one of the Top 100 Spas of the World 2024, as well as a 60-minute signature sense massage (RM288) and coconut foot bath.

The spa boasts breathtaking views of the sea and Pangkor Island. It features multiple private rooms, a couples room and a room dedicated to foot and shoulder massages.

While seated in the comfortable waiting lounge, we filled out a form where we could indicate which areas we were not comfortable being touched, our preference for the masseuse's pressure, whether softer or firmer, and our choice of scented oil.

We were then brought to their private rooms, which were super comfortable and relaxing. After quickly changing into their robes, we lay down on the massage bed, where the masseuse began by sounding a singing bowl and guiding me on a breathing exercise before working his magic.

Another plus is that the products used at Eforea Spa are from Kerstin Florian, which are environmentally friendly and animal cruelty free.

The combination of expert techniques, high-quality products, and serene surroundings made for an unforgettable spa experience that left us feeling rejuvenated and pampered.

Besides an incredible spa, the resort also has a well-equipped fitness centre and a kid’s club, which is said to be a standout feature of the hotel. Although we didn’t experience the centre, as we didn't come with any children, based on our preview review, it seems to be an amazing place for younger guests.

The Kid’s Club offers a variety of engaging activities and play areas designed to keep children entertained and happy, making it an ideal spot for families travelling with young ones.

One of the things that make the resort unique is its four pools. There’s the adult pool, the waterpark-like pool area for bigger kids, a smaller baby pool with slides, and a big jacuzzi for kids and adults.

Overall, the variety of pools and structures is truly amazing, and it's not something many hotels offer. The resort's commitment to providing diverse recreational options makes it a standout choice for families.

Whether you want to relax in the adult pool, let the kids splash around in the water park-like area, or enjoy the jacuzzi together, there's something for everyone. This extensive range of pool facilities adds to the resort's appeal, making it an ideal destination for a family getaway.

A stone’s throw from Pangkor Island

Another standout feature of DoubleTree by Hilton Damai Laut is the fact that it has two private beaches. A smaller, quieter one, which is perfect for couples looking for some privacy, and the bigger one, which hosts a variety of water and land activities courtesy of vendor Sea Moses.

As part of our experience, we were taken on a Pangkor Island tour along with some snorkelling. The island tour was incredibly fun and offered a variety of activities for families. From exploring the island's beautiful beaches to engaging in water sports, there was something for everyone to enjoy. The snorkelling experience was particularly memorable, allowing us to witness the vibrant marine life up close.

While on the tour, we even managed to stop by Coral Beach on Pangkor Island, where we went on a fun canoeing experience. Back at the resort, we managed to ride in the ATV on the beach in a private course that's well taken care of. Although the course was pretty short and simple, the terrain provided a mild challenge.

Besides canoeing, ATV and island hopping, Sea Moses also offers some unique activities such as day and night fishing, river and sunset cruises, jet skis and much more.

Variety of dining options

As the resort is nestled quite deep into the coastline, we don’t recommend driving out for meals, as the journey would take close to 2 hours in total. Fortunately, there’s no abundance of food at the hotel.

In total there are 3 eateries: the central Makan Kitchen, which is an all-day dining restaurant; Hotpot, a more intimate steamboat restaurant that is only open for dinner; and Axis Lounge, which serves snacks and liquor.

We loved the abundance of food choices for breakfast at Makan Kitchen, where you can indulge in an authentic regional Malaysian dining experience complete with live interactive show kitchens and extensive buffet spreads.

Some of our favourites of the breakfast buffet were the fresh roti canai and tosai, nasi lemak and the wide variety of pastries.

For dinner, we enjoyed the range of Western and Asian cuisines as well as the freshly grilled seafood.

Although there is no lunch buffet, we highly recommend also heading to Makan Kitchen for lunch. We sampled the Fish and Chips (RM50), Mediterranean Salmon Salad (RM45), Mexican Chicken Wings (RM45), and Iced Milo Dinosaur (RM20).

The fish and chips, which consisted of deep-fried sea bass, were perfectly cooked, with crispy batter and tender fish. The Mediterranean Salmon Salad was fresh and flavourful, offering a delightful mix of textures and tastes and loaded with blocks of grilled salmon.

Meanwhile, the Mexican Chicken Wings were a hit, with a spicy kick that was balanced by a tangy sauce. To top it off, the Iced Milo Dinosaur was a fun and refreshing treat, perfect for cooling down on a warm day.

For dinner on our last night, we got to experience Hotpot, where you can enjoy a delicious steamboat buffet (RM108 nett) while facing the sea.

The buffet comes with a choice of chicken broth or tom yam soup and your usual affair of seafood, meat and options of carbs.

The highlights of the buffet were the fried rice, seabass and the huge number of dipping sauces (18 to be exact)!

For those who are looking for something light before dinner, the Executive Lounge also serves light bites in the evening. While we were there, they served dishes such as naan with chicken varuval, an assortment of sandwiches and a bunch of desserts and snacks.
