What are we talking about? Face masks lah.
And while most Malaysians have been donning the standard blue or green medical face masks, local designers have been coming up with a variety of designs to spice things up.
Two who stand out are renowned Malaysian fashion designers Tom Abang Saufi and Melinda Looi, who joined forces to come up with a special face mask collection called 'Unity Masks'.
Melinda said that the collection is the duo’s first collaboration even though they have been friends for over 20 years.
“We have been friends for a long time, but we never really collaborated together..and then one idea led to another and before you know it we had created a mask collection,” she said.
Melinda said that the Unity Masks include 16 state/territories flag-inspired designs, two frontliners inspired designs and one featuring the Malaysian flag.
The two frontliners masks are entitled ‘We Love Our Frontliners’, a feeling that many Malaysians share especially during the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak.
The masks include one in a ‘hospital green’ colour and the other has silhouettes of frontliners featured on the design with batik detailing.
Very local, very cool!
Melinda, who has also been in the spotlight recently for making PPEs for frontliners, said that people have been responding positively to the collection.
“Whoever bought the mask is very happy with it and we are getting great reviews.”
“The mask is very affordable and hence some people are sceptical in the beginning but once they order them, customers returned for a repeat order,” she said.
“The masks are all produced in Malaysia, and local businesses need your support now.
“Please go and buy not just ours but other Malaysian designer’s masks and clothing to keep our Malaysian fashion industry afloat,” she said.
And Melinda is right, you guys.

“We wanted to do something positive in these times, and we explored into various design ideas and the name UnityMasks kind of made sense given that we want to celebrate both the Malaysian Rakyat and the frontliners who kept us safe during the MCO,” said Melinda in a written reply to Rojak Daily.Melinda said that the collection is the duo’s first collaboration even though they have been friends for over 20 years.
