There are fast food drive-throughs aplenty, but have you ever wished that there was one serving warm Indian meals? Whether you have or not, Malaysian restaurant Kaara Saaram Claypot has brought a concept Penangites never knew they needed: an Indian drive-through restaurant.

The restaurant established in 2021 specialises in traditional South Indian cuisine and has franchises in Ipoh, Bandar Sunway, Bangsar, Puchong, and more. Some of their mouthwatering dishes include their signature claypot rice and ‘roti canai kari kambing’.

Their 15th branch, located in Georgetown, Penang has made Malaysian history as the first Indian restaurant to have a drive-through fittingly set in Malaysia’s unofficial food capital. This has also landed them in the Malaysian Book of Records.

An Instagram video posted by the restaurant’s page shows a striking double-storey black and red building which offers customers the convenience of ordering dishes such as ‘Shellout Claypot’ and ‘Banana Leaf Tiruvilla Saapadu’ along with drinks such as ‘Bru Coffee’ and ‘Masala Tea’ without even getting out of their cars.

A grand ceremony was held on 21 December to commemorate their record which was attended and officiated by Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr S. Vigneswaran President of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), and Datuk Seri Dr M Saravanan, Deputy President of MIC.

The post read, “Now you don’t have to queue nor worry about parking, cause in Penang you can drive up and get delicious food at Malaysia’s first drive-thru Indian restaurant @kaarasaaramclaypot !
Congratulations on your grand opening and national record entry! Thank you YB @datuk_sara on witnessing this momentous occasion.’
