TLDR
- GAMTAN Imbi offers a calm and spacious Korean BBQ experience focused on premium US Prime beef and careful grilling techniques.
- The King’s Delight set highlights balanced flavours with unique sauces, solid side dishes like Beef Tartare and Naengmyeon, plus standout items such as Steak SOTBAP and Truffle Potato Pancake.
- Drinks include a special Makgeolli infused with red ginseng, complementing the food without overpowering, making GAMTAN ideal for relaxed group dining without the usual Korean BBQ rush.
In a dining landscape crowded with fast-paced Korean BBQ concepts, GAMTAN’s latest Imbi opening feels deliberately measured. Rather than chasing volume or spectacle, the restaurant focuses on pacing, preparation, and a quieter environment designed for longer meals.
The emphasis, as expected, remains on the meat, specifically premium beef and carefully handled cuts, but delivered with a sense of control that sets the tone for the entire experience.
To understand what GAMTAN does best, we visited its newly opened Imbi outlet and sampled a curated selection of the restaurant’s signature dishes.
Garden first, restaurant second
The space sets expectations early. Guests enter via a stone path flanked by bamboo and shallow water features, and the dining room opens up with floor-to-ceiling windows and a central campfire-style installation. With around 100 seats, the restaurant feels spacious, and the layout accommodates different dining needs, from window-side tables to counters and a separate VIP room.

The atmosphere is calm but social, casual enough for friends, refined enough for a date night that doesn’t feel overdressed.
King Galbi: the centrepiece
We tried The King’s Delight set (RM348), which gives a clear picture of what GAMTAN does well and where it wants to stand in KL’s competitive Korean BBQ scene.
Before the grill is lit, the table is filled with a spread of side dishes and accompaniments that set expectations for the meal. Alongside familiar offerings like white kimchi and assorted pickled vegetables are several sauces intended to frame, rather than dominate, the meat.

There are the expected staples, ssamjang and a soy-based dipping sauce, but the most interesting addition is a tonkatsu-style sauce finished with actual breadcrumbs. It adds texture and a mild sweetness, offering a slightly unconventional option that works surprisingly well with beef, especially for diners who prefer a softer, more rounded finish.
The King Galbi (500g) anchors the entire meal and reflects GAMTAN’s philosophy most clearly. This is US Prime-grade beef, presented as a single, substantial cut designed for sharing. Rather than arriving drenched in marinade, the meat is treated with restraint. Staff assist with grilling, controlling heat and timing to ensure even doneness and avoid flare-ups that could overpower the beef’s natural flavour.

The result is beef that tastes clean and balanced. The marbling provides richness, but the texture remains firm, not greasy. Various salts and condiments are offered alongside, though none feel compulsory. They’re there to simply complement the meat with the beef remaining as the focus.
Strong supporting dishes
The Beef Tartare follows a similar mindset. Finely sliced raw beef is lightly seasoned, topped with egg yolk, and paired with pear for crunch and freshness. The flavours are restrained, slightly sweet, mildly savoury. It was presented with an unexpected set of accompaniments: nacho chips, and a sauce. While unconventional in a Korean BBQ context, the combination worked, the chips adding crunch to the soft beef.

The set also includes a choice of Naengmyeon, either spicy or clear. We opted for the cold version, which plays its role effectively. The broth is clean and refreshing, the noodles firm and elastic, cutting through the richness of the grilled meat.
Alongside it, the Kimchi Stew provides warmth and depth. It leans savoury rather than aggressively spicy, with a well-rounded fermentation note that complements the rest of the table.
Solid sides that hold their own
One of the more memorable components of the entire meal was the Steak SOTBAP (RM48), a claypot rice dish topped with steak. Served sizzling, it releases a warm, toasty aroma as the rice continues cooking at the base of the pot.
It’s more substantial than most Korean BBQ side dishes and works well as a midpoint between the grill and the rest of the meal.
The Truffle Potato Pancake (4 pcs) (RM18) arrives crisp on the outside and soft within. The truffle flavour is noticeable but controlled, avoiding the heaviness that often accompanies truffle-laden dishes. It’s easy to share and holds up well against the richer meats.

The Gamtan Noodle (RM23) turned out to be one of the more surprising dishes on the table. Closer in spirit to a pasta than a traditional Korean noodle, it was rich, creamy, and indulgent, providing comfort rather than contrast. While it sat outside the usual Korean BBQ expectations, it worked well as a standalone dish and offered a satisfying counterpoint to the grilled meat.
Drinks with a twist
Instead of defaulting to mainstream Korean alcohol options, GAMTAN offers a house Makgeolli infused with red ginseng. Slightly earthy, mildly sweet, and not overly alcoholic, it pairs comfortably with grilled meats and heavier dishes without clashing.
For diners who prefer more familiar choices, there is also a selection of soju, alongside cocktails, soft drinks, and tea. The range is broad enough to suit different preferences at the table, whether pairing drinks with the meal or keeping things simple.
Our verdict
GAMTAN Imbi does not aim to be loud, fast, or excessive. Its strength lies in control, careful grilling, thoughtful sequencing, and a dining environment designed to keep things unhurried.
The King’s Delight set offers a well-rounded view of the restaurant: quality beef, solid supporting dishes, balanced flavours, and steady service. It’s particularly well-suited for group meals where conversation matters as much as the food, or for diners who want Korean BBQ without the usual sensory overload.
In a city where Korean BBQ is often loud and fast, GAMTAN stands out by doing less, and doing it properly.
