Since 1962, Malaysia has been sending a bright, beautiful young lady to the Miss Universe pageant.

However, that streak will be ending this year.

Coming back stronger next year

The Miss Universe 2021 pageant, which will take place in Eilat, Israel in December, will not see a Malaysian representative.

This was announced by the Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation (MUMO) in an official statement on Tuesday (17 August).

According to MUMO, the decision not to send a representative was due to the worsening COVID-19 pandemic.

That also meant that MUMO will not be organising a Miss Universe Malaysia pageant this year.

Francisca Luhong James made the country proud.
"We note that the Miss Universe Organisation will have its 70th annual pageant in Eilat, Israel in December. We have decided to decline their invitation to join in the event.

"We have also decided not to organise Miss Universe Malaysia 2021 as a result of the seriousness of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country. Furthermore interstate travel has also been restricted.

"We wish all contestants the best, and we cannot wait to return to the pageant next time," the statement read.

Earlier this year, Malaysia was represented by Francisca Luhong James for the 69th Miss Universe pageant held in Florida, the United States.
