There’s something about an empty school after dark that just feels unsettling. Maybe it’s the long corridors, darkened classrooms, or silent staircases. Places that seem completely ordinary during the day can take on a much creepier atmosphere once everyone has gone home.

And in Malaysia, some schools have built spooky reputations over the years. From dark histories dating back to the colonial era to rumours of ghostly sightings, here are some of the schools in the country that are allegedly haunted.
 

1. Victoria Institution

Founded in 1893, Victoria Institution is one of the country's oldest educational institutions. During the Japanese Occupation in Malaya, the school served as a regional administrative and military headquarters.

It is believed that the school witnessed the torture of both locals and British soldiers during this period. Over time, rumours emerged of lingering spirits, supposedly belonging to those who met tragic fates during one of the darkest chapters in the country's history.
 

2. Penang Free School

Founded in 1816, Penang Free School is one of the oldest schools in Southeast Asia. The institution has produced many prominent alumni, including Malaysia's first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, and legendary actor Tan Sri P. Ramlee.

The school has also gained a reputation as one of Malaysia's most haunted educational institutions. During World War II, when the Japanese Army occupied Malaya, it is believed that the school grounds were used as a torture site.

One of the most common urban legends associated with the school involves reports of hearing a woman's scream near midnight. According to local stories, the voice belongs to the spirit of a woman who died after enduring unimaginable torture.

3. St. Michael's Institution

Founded in 1912, St. Michael's Institution is known for its elegant Gothic architecture. During World War II, however, the Japanese secret police reportedly took over the school and used it as their headquarters.

Beneath its historic buildings, the school is said to contain a network of tunnels that were allegedly used for torture during the war. One of the most frequently shared paranormal stories involves sightings of a headless priest dressed in a black robe and clutching prayer beads.

4. Chung Ling High School

Located in Penang, Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Chung Ling, better known as Chung Ling High School, played a role during the colonial era. Founded in 1923, the school was converted into a hospital for soldiers by the British Army in 1941.

The school's darkest chapter is believed to have come during the Japanese occupation. Rumour has it that many Chinese people, including teachers and students connected to the school, were killed during the Sook Ching massacre.

Over the years, there have been reports of paranormal sightings involving ghostly figures believed to be victims of the massacre. Cases of mass hysteria have also reportedly occurred from time to time. Another persistent legend claims that dogs can sometimes be heard howling around the school late at night after supposedly spotting spirits roaming the grounds.

5. SMK Pengkalan Chepa 2

In 2016, SMK Pengkalan Chepa 2 made national headlines after experiencing an outbreak of mass hysteria. Over the course of several days, more than 50 students and eight teachers were reportedly affected.

Some students claimed they saw a dark figure in classrooms and the female toilets, while others reported feeling a heavy presence and numbness throughout their bodies.

Due to the severity of the incident, the school temporarily closed for two days to allow a cleansing ritual to be carried out. Although the exact cause remains unclear, officials later concluded that the episode was linked to chronic stress, anxiety, and depression.

6. Convent Bukit Nanas

Before Convent Bukit Nanas (CBN) became one of Malaysia's first schools to be recognised as a Cluster School of Excellence, the site was reportedly a pineapple and coffee plantation. Founded in 1899, the school's early years were far from smooth.

Just a month after taking up the role, CBN's first principal was said to have been found dead under mysterious circumstances. Authorities later ruled the case a murder-suicide.

During World War II, the school was converted into a refuge for civilians during the Japanese Occupation and also housed orphaned children.

Among the paranormal stories associated with the school are reports of crying babies being heard in empty areas and sightings of a mysterious woman appearing around the grounds.

7. Methodist Boys School

Like many schools on this list, Methodist Boys School in Kuala Lumpur has a history tied to the Japanese Occupation during World War II. It is believed that the school functioned as a military base and barracks for Japanese soldiers.

There are also claims of secret underground tunnels that once connected the school to Confucian Chinese High School.

Among the most talked-about ghost stories linked to the school are sightings of ghostly figures wandering the halls and reports of Japanese soldiers still marching across the grounds at night.

8. SMK Serian

In 2008, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Serian in Sarawak was hit by a wave of mass hysteria that reportedly caused 12 students to scream uncontrollably and behave erratically.

One student later claimed that his mind had gone completely blank and that he had lost control of his own body. A friend also alleged that the student's voice changed dramatically while others attempted to calm him down.

As the situation escalated, classes were suspended after nearly 20 additional students reportedly began displaying similar symptoms, with some believing the incident was linked to supernatural causes.

Whether these stories are rooted in history, urban legends, or unexplained events, they have become part of the folklore surrounding these schools. While there is no concrete evidence to support claims of paranormal activity, the tales continue to be shared by students, teachers, and locals, ensuring that these schools remain among Malaysia's most talked-about allegedly haunted locations.
