Who says girls can’t be into fast cars? While most people’s feeds on the ‘Gram are full of themselves café hopping or on holiday, one look at Latun Fatin Lyana’s Instagram page will show you that it’s full of snaps of her prized possession: her car and there are splashes of the colour Tiffany Blue on her page everywhere in the form of her Honda City Hatchback. We spoke to this admirable lady who works as a dentist and races in her downtime!

Latun first graduated with Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Surgery at Faculty of Dentistry Universiti Teknologi MARA before finishing her internship at the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the Faculty of Dentistry, UiTM Sungai Buloh this early September. Even during her university years, she was known as the girl with the Tiffany Blue car and now all her cars sport the same hue.

Need for Speed

In her downtime, she’s all about speed and cars. She enjoys admiring the different car makes and models by actively joining car clubs and events. Although there wasn’t anyone with a racing background in her family, Latun started racing after enjoying a GoKarting outing with her friends and it’s grown into her passion since and she now races using her own Honda Jazz and Honda City Sedan.

The need for speed is real with this lady as she even has a legit license from the Motorsport Association Malaysia, which is the official sanctioning body for Motorsports in our country. To get the license you need to undergo medical check-ups and also an exam, which has to be renewed yearly.

She first got her license when she participated in the MSF (Malaysian Speed Festival) Merdeka 2020 and was selected to become the second driver under one local race team. Since then, she’s boasted numerous wins, even placing fourth at the MSF Merdeka Sepang Circuit Super Production and winning over ten championships through GoKart and car racing.

This means she can actually compete over at the Sepang International Circuit and she has raced three times there already, although Latun said, “I’m still new to Sepang and I’m still learning.”

Sounds crazy impressive to us! After recently finishing her final year of her studies, she’s planning to ramp up her involvement in competitions, starting with GoKart and further plans to compete professionally in Sepang next year.

Latun proves her skills behind the wheel by being active in kart racing. In August, she was chosen along with four ladies to compete in the Asian Endurance Series (AES) GoKarting Championship Round 3 Season 2022. She managed to clinch a spot amongst the top five females with the fastest timing at X Park when they opened the selection to the public. They were the only female team to compete in the competition besides nine other male teams ––– and they won no.2 on the podium! All power to the girls!

Turning Her Hobby into a Business

Turning her passion into a money making venture, she is also a partner in a business selling car accessories, RS Bangsawan that mainly focuses on B-segment Hondas. They help car enthusiasts to pimp their ride and make their four-wheeled vehicles really stand out on the road.

Despite making money from her business and being a dentist, all this racing must cost quite a bit of money right? When we asked her how she sustains her hobby, Latun said, ““For training, you’ll require proper gear and training, so there’s no need to jump into it all at once ––– just go at it slowly according to your own budget.”

“For now, I’m just enjoying it during weekends, or even when I can find some downtime at night. I think that it is essential to know how to find a balance between your hobby and career. I usually go GoKarting with my female friends because many of them have an interest in it, but don’t have any friends to accompany or motivate them to try it out for the first time.”

Her Message to Girls

As a woman in the racing field, she definitely faced challenges and stigmas in the racing field when the sport was still less popularised, because women weren’t encouraged to join in the same way that men were. Fortunately, things are beginning to change and Latun said that, “We’re all full of passion like the guys and nowadays, us girls have the chance to compete too. Provided that you have enough effort, focus, and dedication, you can definitely achieve success!”

She goes on to share a message for other girls who may be into cars and racing: “It is important to try and not be afraid –– because you never know what your ability and capabilities are if you don’t try.

Every girl has to maximise their own potential because I believe that gender does not limit your capabilities. So give it a try and always discover new things. And mostly, have fun!”

Next, she looks forward to another GoKart race at X Park Malaysia at Bandar Sunway besides pursuing her dental career and waiting for her next clinic posting from the government and juggling her business at the same time.

For the single lads who may be interested, we have to unfortunately tell you that this lovely lass is just recently got hitched in August though, so keep searching!
