M’sians Condemn Group for Bringing Dogs to Mamak, Allegedly Refused to Move After Being Asked To Leave

Animals are generally not allowed inside eateries due to hygiene and food safety concerns. However, a group of customers recently sparked controversy after they were allegedly seen bringing their pet dogs to a mamak restaurant in Selangor.

In a video posted on Threads by user @eeiikaaa.__, a couple could be seen seated at a table with their dog on a leash. The dog was also seen interacting with another dog belonging to a female customer seated nearby.

The user who uploaded the video claimed she witnessed the incident while dining with friends near Uptown Kota Damansara. She further alleged that personnel from the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) had approached the group and reprimanded them for bringing the animals into the eatery, but they initially refused to move.

"I didn't confront them to avoid a fight, but MBSJ personnel approached them and told them off. However, they remained seated and only left reluctantly after other customers at the mamak began staring at them," she alleged.

Malaysians weren't pleased

Unsurprisingly, the video has drawn significant backlash from Malaysians online. Some commenters also speculated that the group may not have been locals, although their nationalities have not been verified.

Others criticised the restaurant, arguing that staff should have stopped the customers from entering with the dogs in the first place.

One user commented, "Since when can we bring animals into eateries? They should have been prevented from entering the restaurant in the first place."

Restaurant apologises, urges public not to boycott

Following the incident, the woman who uploaded the video urged the public not to boycott the restaurant, saying the episode should serve as a reminder to respect Malaysia's religious and cultural sensitivities.

While acknowledging that the restaurant's staff should have intervened earlier, she said customers also have a responsibility to be considerate when bringing pets into public spaces.

Meanwhile, Restoran Faizul Maju issued an apology, admitting that its staff had erred by allowing customers to bring pet dogs into the dining area.

The restaurant said the affected area has since undergone a sertu cleansing process in accordance with Islamic guidelines and that employees have been given strict reminders to prevent similar incidents from happening again. Photos of the sertu process were also shared in the statement.
