Kuala Lumpur's cultural landscape is about to welcome an exciting new addition.

Opening its doors on 1 November 2026, Muara Arts, a new not-for-profit gallery dedicated to showcasing modern and contemporary art from Malaysia and across Southeast Asia. Located in the heart of Medan Pasar, where the Klang and Gombak rivers meet, the gallery aims to become a vibrant meeting point for art, creativity, and cultural exchange.

More than just another gallery space, Muara Arts forms part of a larger vision to revitalise one of Kuala Lumpur's most historic districts into a thriving cultural precinct filled with arts programming, public events, cafés, restaurants, retail spaces, and eventually a dedicated performing arts centre.

A new chapter for a historic corner of Kuala Lumpur

The name "Muara" comes from the Malay word for an estuary or river mouth, a place where waters converge. It's a fitting name for a venue situated near the birthplace of Kuala Lumpur itself, at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers.

The gallery occupies six restored Art Deco shophouses dating back to the 1930s. Covering approximately 20,000 square feet, the adaptive reuse project carefully preserves the buildings' historic character while introducing museum-standard gallery facilities for contemporary audiences.

Designed by Dr Tan LM Architect and Sean Carpenter of Linear Vista, the space balances heritage architecture with modern exhibition capabilities, creating an environment where the city's past and future can exist side by side.

An ambitious debut exhibition

To mark its opening, Muara Arts will present A–Z of Southeast Asian Art: A Critical Dictionary, running from 1 November 2026 until 4 April 2027.

The exhibition brings together works by more than 40 artists from across Southeast Asia, featuring painting, sculpture, textile, installation, video, and works on paper.

Featured names include renowned artists such as Pacita Abad, Ho Tzu Nyen, Tiffany Chung, Yee I-Lann, Wong Hoy Cheong, Fyerool Darma, Sharon Chin, Nadiah Bamadhaj, Pangrok Sulap, and many others.

Inspired by Singaporean artist Ho Tzu Nyen's ongoing project The Critical Dictionary of Southeast Asia, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the region through themes connected to culture, ecology, geography, history, and politics. Rather than presenting a single definition of Southeast Asia, the exhibition offers multiple perspectives on how the region can be understood, questioned, and imagined.

Visitors can expect entries ranging from concepts such as Animism and Archipelago to thought-provoking themes like Corruption, creating a rich and diverse journey through the many narratives that shape Southeast Asia today.

Making art more accessible

One of Muara Arts' key missions is making art accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or familiarity with the art world. The gallery describes itself as a space free from intimidation or pretension, encouraging visitors to simply come with curiosity and an open mind.

Admission tickets for the inaugural exhibition are already available:

  • ASEAN Adult: RM25
  • Non-ASEAN Adult: RM50
  • ASEAN Concession: RM12
  • Non-ASEAN Concession: RM20
  • Children under 12: Free admission

More than a gallery

Looking beyond its opening, Muara Arts is also laying the groundwork for a future performing arts centre scheduled to open in 2029. The development will include a 345-seat proscenium theatre, a 190-seat black box space, rehearsal facilities, and expanded arts programming.
