This Pair Of Game-Worn Michael Jordan Sneakers Just Sold For A Price Of A Luxury Condo In Mont Kiara
If you have a couple of million ringgit, what would you buy for yourself?
A posh condominium in the heart of Kuala Lumpur? Sure. A fast supercar to flex? Definitely.
What about a pair of really old sneakers?
If you scoffed at the idea, a sneaker collector did just that.
Most expensive sneakers ever sold
According to a report by CNN, a pair of black, red and white Air Jordan 1 sneakers has been sold for a record-breaking USD560,000 (RM2.44 million) to an unnamed bidder. The pair of sneakers, which was worn in a game by basketball legend Michael Jordan in 1985, was auctioned off at Sotheby’s auction house on Sunday (17 May).
Sotheby's said in a press release that the autographed sneakers sold for more than three times the estimated auction price.
"Following a bidding war which drove the value up by USD300,000 (RM1.3mil) within the final twenty minutes of the sale, the pair achieved more than 3.5x their USD150,000 (RM653,000) high estimate," the auction house said.
The auction reportedly saw the participation of bidders from six countries across four continents, Sothesby's revealed.
It is now the most expensive basketball shoes ever sold in an auction, dethroning the 'Moon Shoe', one of Nike’s first sneakers, that sold for USD437,000 (RM1.9mil) last year.
That pair of Air Jordan 1 was made exclusively for the 57-year-old, as he was known to wear "mismatched shoes most of his career, the pair is in a size 13 (left shoe) and a 13.5 (right shoe)."
We hope the new owner would lock it up in a safe, considering that the pair of sneakers is more expensive than a Ferrari.
