In this day and age where almost everything takes place in digital form, it’s nice to take a step back and experience the process of creating something physical in the real world.

FUJIFILM’s instant camera instax series offers just that! They’re just so much fun to use with the delight of paperback pictures that get printed right on the spot.

FUJIFILM’s latest collaboration with global pop icons, BTS, further heightens the excitement.

Their popular mini 11 instant camera family gets a new member with the introduction of the instax mini 11 BTS Butter version.

Yes, the chart-topping “Butter” was the inspiration for this smooth collaboration. To complement the range, the instax mini film BTS Butter version is also a thing!

Ta-daa! (Image credit: Rojak Daily)

We got our hands on this special edition instax and got busy capturing memories.

The first impression

Cute, adorable and charming – these are the adjectives that instantly come to our mind when thinking of how to describe the look of the instax mini 11 BTS Butter version. It’s just so appealing – and this is coming from a non-hardcore BTS fan.

BTS fan or not, you have to admit that this is a nice-looking instax! (Image credit: Rojak Daily)

We also feel that it adds to one’s personality and outfit. The shade of Butter Yellow is just nice; it’s not too striking nor too dull. The lens bezel is decorated with a burst of colourful shapes that matches the whole vibe too. We dig it!

It also comes with a matching shoulder strap.

We are absolutely pleased with how the strap looks and feels. However, we did find ourselves struggling to tie it to the camera because apparently, we weren’t aware of the proper looping method. A quick Google search helped and it was all good!

We know that we’ll be keeping this strap with us for a long time to come. (Image credit: Rojak Daily)

The instax mini 11 BTS Butter version also comes with shutter button accessories – a jewelled yellow button and the Butter heart emblem. If you do get yourself the instax mini 11 BTS Butter version, make sure to look out for them in the box. They’re pretty small and it’d be easy to miss.

The Butter heart emblem won our hearts. But we found some difficulties trying to keep the emblem sticking to the shutter button.

We’re not sure if it’s the lack of stickiness of the double-sided tape provided or if we just didn’t apply it the right way. We ended up keeping the emblem in a safe place instead of forcing it because we just didn’t want to risk losing the pretty little thing.

The instax mini 11 range operates on a pair of AA batteries – the BTS Butter version is no different. We’re not too fond of this as we prefer the convenience of a rechargeable battery but it’s not a big deal.

With the instax mini 11 BTS Butter version comes the instax mini film BTS Butter version too. It features a yellow border sprinkled with the signature BTS Butter heart insignia.

The film is made available in single cartridges featuring 10 exposures each. (Image credit: Rojak Daily)

The snap test

Just like the other Mini 11 instant cameras, the BTS Butter version comes with the Automatic Exposure function.

It is supposed to “automatically sense the level of ambient light when the shutter button is pressed and optimises the shutter speed and flash output according to the condition. It allows even novice instax users to take photos that are automatically properly exposed regardless of conditions, producing high-quality instant photo prints on the spot.”

It’s on! (Image credit: Rojak Daily)

We must admit that we were indeed looking forward to shooting with the instax mini 11 BTS Butter version. As a regular user of the instax Mini 90 Neo Classic, we were also quite intrigued to see how this model would fare in comparison. However, our first two pictures with the instax mini 11 left us pretty frustrated.

We took our first picture indoors with the lights on. The second picture was taken outdoors on a clear morning at around 8am. Both pictures came out overexposed. You just can’t tell what the subject was.

Nooo. (Image credit: Rojak Daily)

Yet another nooo.

For a moment, it had us worrying if there was something wrong with our device because our past experience with the instax mini camera was unlike this. But we figured the flash could be the reason. We tried looking for ways to adjust the setting but it was to no avail. Perhaps that’s the automatic feature doing its job.

It just bummed us out that we had a couple of films put to waste already.

Our third picture was purposely taken in a dim room – just to see if that would make any difference in the results and, lo and behold, the picture finally developed decently.

Not our best attempt but at least, you could tell what the subject was. (Image credit: Rojak Daily)

While the manual suggested that it’s a no-no to cover the built-in flash, we tried doing so anyway. On a bright sunny afternoon, with our fingers covering the flash, we got a satisfactory result.

The instax mini 11 BTS Butter version also offers the Selfie Mode – just like the other instax mini 11 models.

“Users can activate the Selfie Mode, perfect for taking selfies and close-up shots, by simply pulling out the front end edge of the lens after powering the camera on. This makes it super easy to take selfies and close-up pictures,” says the manual.

So yes, you gotta pull the lens until another layer of it pops out.

The close-up looks nice!

Not bad at all! (Image credit: Rojak Daily)

We’d say the camera does a great job capturing pictures at night too.

Woot. (Image credit: Rojak Daily)

Batu-bata (read: batu-butter). Geddit, geddit? (Image credit: Rojak Daily)

Also, yes, we haven’t quite gotten the hang of how to make sure that the subject is at the centre.

On another note, as shown, the BTS Butter heart insignia that decorates the border of the film has the word ‘Butter’ all written in portrait orientation. Therefore, we feel that portrait-oriented pictures look and fit better with the usage of this film.

In our opinion, the landscape-oriented pictures appear a bit off because of the word orientation.

The verdict

We have nothing but praises for how the instax mini 11 BTS Butter version looks. It is tastefully designed (pun intended).

But we’re not thrilled about how it's tricky to understand what makes some pictures turn out better than the others. We are admittedly still pretty bitter that we had some not-so-great results, especially early on when we were psyched to shoot away. We probably just need more practice with it.

And it doesn’t really help that we’re so used to having the ability to control the settings and decide the shooting modes for ourselves – that just prompted us to make comparisons so quickly even though these are two different models with different features and it’s probably not very fair of us to pit them against each other.

But then again, we know that we wouldn’t mind being deprived of making those choices if it wasn’t for those washed-out pictures (which had our hearts crying because the film is so pretty and it hurts to see it go to waste).

It’s not all bad, of course. When the elements are in order, the pictures are up to snuff.

Its performance is not exactly as smooth as we hoped it would be. (Image credit: Rojak Daily)

We feel that if you’re looking to have an accessory that would add a dash of bubbliness (butteriness?) to your look and personality, the combination of the instax mini 11 BTS Butter Version and its accompanying film is the answer. Of course, it is also a great display of identity for loyal fans of the phenomenal music group.

However, if the result of the pictures is your main priority, then, you might want to browse around for other potentially better options.

In essence, the instax mini 11 BTS Butter Version is a nice camera to carry around and would act as a wonderful addition to your collection of cameras (and merchandise for those who are big fans of BTS). But to avoid feeling let down, one shouldn’t expect too much regarding its picture-capturing ability – especially if you’re not super familiar with how to go about with the instax mini 11 and its unique ways.
