12:30PM – Show some love to defenseless and unwanted animals at SPCA

SPCA is an non-profit organisation with a cause dedicated to protecting defenseless animals and provide temporary shelter to unwanted animals. You can volunteer through the PetCare Programme (PCP), which is usually run on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 2pm. You can also give one of the animals there a forever home, with you! However, looking after a pet is no easy job. Make sure you are both financially and mentally prepared to take on the responsibility of a pet parent.

2:00PM – Lunch: B Station

This restaurant isn’t pet-friendly, but is a convenient 5-minute drive from SPCA. B Station is a Korean-Western fusion restaurant with super cute cottage-styled interior decoration. Food here ranges from the traditional Korean (ramen, bulgogi and the sorts) to the classic hot dogs and pastas. They also serve a wide variety of pastries and cakes (such as, Belgium waffles and a super yummy Cheese Brownie Cake). B Station is a comfy and homely café to relax and cool-off at, on a Saturday afternoon.

3:00PM – Visit (or volunteer at) Zoo Negara

From B Station, a drive of 15 minutes will get you to Zoo Negara, our national zoo. Now, one thing that really provokes our thoughts is this: are you really an animal-lover if you advocate the confinement of wildlife? However, fret not, as the Zoo vows to make sure that the old zoo concept is changed entirely. Their mission is to provide outstanding and dynamic habitat for animals, while leading and innovating wildlife conservation and recreation. And you can be a part of that! Zoo Negara offers a volunteer programme that is open to all, aged 16 and above. Volunteers can get a chance to help out zookeepers at exhibits including Birds, Bears, Great Apes, Big Cats and Aquarium.

The volunteer programme is an 8-hour programme, starting at 8am. Registration forms and more info can be found at their official website. Entrance tickets to the Zoo (for Malaysians) are RM44 for adults, and RM16 for children aged 3-12 years old.

5:00PM – Experience Yozakura at an outdoor Candlelight Picnic

Yozakura is an activity in Japan where people gather to view sakura trees at night. The KL Japanese-English Language Exchange is hosting an event this Saturday to provide an experience, similar to that of Yozakura with candles in a natural environment. At this potluck event, participants can engage in fun Japanese and English conversation exchanges while sharing delicacies with one another. Participation is at no cost so bring your Uber driver, best friend’s grandaunties, Pak Guard, whoever – the more the merrier!

SATURDAY (9 APRIL)

8:30AM – Morning jog and picnic at Perdana Botanical Garden

More commonly known as Lake Gardens, this city park has been around since the colonial era. Developed in 1888, Lake Gardens is a 91.6-hectare large park that is a popular location for joggers, bikers, drone-flyers, tai-chi aunties and uncles and outdoor aerobics enthusiasts. They have a huge playground that seems like a town of its own – with connecting bridges and life-sized topiaries – and makes us wish we were kids again.

11:00AM – Visit these places of attraction

Who knew there were so many outdoor places of attraction in the heart of KL? Near Lake Gardens, is the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park as well as a Hibiscus Garden and Orchid Garden. More deets below:

1) Kuala Lumpur Bird Park What’s good: It’s the world’s largest free-flight aviary, home to more than 3000 birds! Out of the four zones in the park, three closely resemble the birds’ natural habitat, where they are free to roam and fly around. This park is pure tranquility. 2) Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park What’s good: A place where you can enjoy nature while over 5,000 butterflies fly around (we know this might sound scary to some but trust us, it is absolutely beautiful). Besides butterflies, there are also exotic plants, turtles and insects. The park has a museum where a large collection of butterflies and insects from around the world are on display. 1:00PM – Lunch: choose from a wide variety of cuisines at Atria Shopping Gallery

Since next up on the agenda is held at Atria Shopping Gallery, we find it most convenient to have lunch here as well, especially since they have so many restaurants to choose from. On the upper floors of this mall, there are popular restaurants such as Pho Vietz and Pelicana. For Japanese food, there is an often-packed joint with a sushi belt called Sushi Tsen. For aunthentic Thai food, Go Thai is one of our favourites. Naughty Nuri’s, Nando’s, Antipodean and Absolute Thai can also be found here.

2:30PM – Check out the International Cat Show

If you’re a cat owner or cat-lover, this exhibition is for you! Here, at Atria Shopping Gallery, you get the chance to show your pet’s supermodel side with the Car Beauty & Fashion Contest, try your hand at batik painting with the Batik Painting Contest or get creative with the Poster Drawing Contest. There is also a Cat-Shaped Cake Decoration Contest where you can pay tribute to your pet by modelling a cake after your feline friend! At the International Cat Show, pedigree and household breeds such as Persian, Main Coon, Abyssinian and Sarawak will be showcased.

4:30PM – Hike up Bukit Gasing to watch the sunset

Bukit Nanas is a hill located at the border of Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur that serves as the city’s green lung. The highest point on this hill is 160 metres. Once a rubber tree plantation, this 100-hectare green oasis is rich in rare flowers and plants, as well as monkeys and birds – perfect for those who love taking pictures. Entrance to the trail is free. Much yay, because we’re cheapskates. Another picnic won’t hurt. Feast on your packed dinner while you watch the PJ and KL light up as the sun sets, from the Jambatan Gantung (Suspension Bridge) and Menara Pandangan (Watch Tower).

8:30PM – End the day with a relaxing DIY

Did you know that you can buy three cute little cacti in cute little pots for only RM7.90 from IKEA? Much yay, again! Buy a pack (or five) and craft yourself this adorable terrarium for your home or office! The best part about cactus terrariums is that they require minimal watering, so you don’t need green thumbs to keep this little indoor garden of yours alive.
