This TikToker Tries Out Hitchhiking to See If It’s Possible in Malaysia
Sticking your thumb up at the side of the road at oncoming cars is the international sign for hitchhiking and is used to flag down passing drivers for a free ride.
For reasons like our sweltering weather and the fact that we need our A/C to live, most Malaysians tend to drive everywhere,, but strangely we don’t really see anyone hitchhiking here. And that all changed with this French TikToker.
Alwin, who was on holiday in Malaysia, tried out hitchhiking for himself to see if it would work. He documented his full ride to Cameron Highlands to get the answer to the question: Is it possible to hitchhike in Malaysia?

His ‘adventure’ started when a follower of his recognised him and gave him a 5-minute ride to a good spot to hitchhike. She dropped him on the road that was apparently the entry point to Cameron Highlands, a good tip if you want to hitchhike in the future!
He wisely put a distance of approximately 50m between himself and the huge signboard pointing to Cameron Highlands that would give the cars space to stop. Then it was time for some patience as he waited for a car to stop for him, but it only took him two minutes!
He greeted the driver with a friendly “Apa khabar?” and asked him if he was headed to the tourist destination. The driver readily agreed to give him a ride and drove him from Ipoh to Cameron Highlands as he was headed in the same direction.
According to one user who commented on the video, Alwin was picked up by none other than former national taekwondo athlete Wong Kai Meng and they chatted about sports all the way!
At the end of his journey, Alwin commented that it was “super easy” to hitchhike, and it only took him 90 minutes. Wow, what a good way to take a budgeted trip and save some money. However, you should always of course, exercise caution when hitchhiking, especially if you’re female! His tip is to always be careful and to always use common sense.
The Frenchman then compared his experience of hitchhiking in Malaysia to carrying it out in Europe.

According to him, it depends on the country in Europe that you are in. He mentioned that the countries that have been the hardest for him to hitchhike in Europe include Greece and some parts of Switzerland while it was super easy in Balkan countries and his own homeland, France.
He ended the video by saying that because the transportation here in Malaysia is not optimal, it makes it easier to hitchhike. Plus, people are very nice. Malaysians are known for our amazing hospitality after all!
