In the age of smart devices and digital assistants, finding a speaker that combines modern technology with some retro feel can be difficult. Enter the Tivoli Audio Model One BT—a Bluetooth radio speaker that brings together the best of both worlds.
The device which combines both Bluetooth capabilities with a radio all into one classic-looking speaker promises to deliver not just something that looks good but sounds good as well.
We reviewed the Tivoli Audio Model One BT and tested whether or not it truly lives up to its reputation as a stylish yet functional audio device.

Design and build

Having taken the Tivoli Audio Model One BT out of its box, I was surprised to find that it was much heavier and bulkier than what I had initially imagined.
The unit has a nice heft to it which points to some solid built quality. Despite its weight, the speaker only stands 21 cm wide by 11 cm high meaning that it won’t take up too much space on your desk or wherever else you choose to display it.
In a world where audio devices have usually gone for the most futuristic look, the Model One BT has more of a retro appearance reminiscent of Scandinavian design, with a combination of wood elements and some metal bits and pieces.
The Tivoli Audio Model One BT comes in five varieties of colours and I was given the one in Walnut / Beige. Although I personally prefer darker-coloured devices, the woody accents made the speaker look premium and aesthetically pleasing. It also made it easy to blend in with other wooden furniture so you won’t have to worry about it standing out too much.
On the bottom, four soft vibration-isolating feet do a great job of eliminating any rattling that other objects on the same table might otherwise produce when next to the Model One BT at full volume.
Additionally, the control knobs were also smooth and solid which was a testament to Tivoli’s amazing build quality.

Connectivity and functionality

Setting up the Model One BT could not be any easier. All you have to do is to literally turn on the switch. It’s truly a breath of fresh air in an era where anything digital often requires either an app or a Wi-Fi connection to get things started.
One thing I appreciated was the fact that the device comes packed with a variety of different plug types. Although this might not be that useful unless you are travelling with it, it’s a great option to have.
An element that I liked was the differential rotation between the tuning knob and the radio frequency selection, which not only looked great but allowed for fine tuning without having to master micro-degrees of rotation. This made it exceptionally easy to quickly tune into the interference-free reception of one of the many radio stations.

Sound quality

While listening to radio stations, I found the sound quality to be extremely clear. Not only was it super easy to tune thanks to its easily handled dial, but the majority of sounds from various radio stations offered superb sound quality with minimal interference.
If you’re not a fan of radio because, to be frank, who even still buys a radio in 2024? The beauty of the Model One BT allows you to easily switch to a Bluetooth speaker. Connecting from my iPhone was straightforward and swift. While the sound quality on the radio mode was great, it was even better as a Bluetooth speaker with barely any signal loss or interruptions.
I was also surprised that the speaker could go to such high volumes. Although the sound quality on the radio became uncomfortably loud and distorted, it wasn’t the same when it came to performing as a Bluetooth speaker as the Model One BT retained high-quality sound via Bluetooth even on the highest volume.

Verdict

After a month with the device, I can safely say that the device has successfully combined the charm of classic design with the convenience of modern technology.
Its vintage aesthetics make it a stylish addition to any room, while its Bluetooth connectivity and impressive sound quality cater to the needs of today's listeners. Although it may lack some of the features found in more advanced smart speakers, its simplicity is part of its appeal, offering a straightforward and enjoyable listening experience.
The Tivoli Audio Model One BT currently retails for RM1,099 which is pretty comparable to other high end speakers in the market. For those who value both form and function, the Model One BT is a worthy investment that brings a touch of nostalgia into the modern age.
